Hold on a sec - pads AND discs? what's wrong with the discs? Unless you've been driving round a track, they're not warped, and since there's still life in the pads, they're not scratched. Discs aren't meant to be replaced often, pads are. This would be the biggest cost that you can get rid of...

These days pad material wears discs a lot more than it did preciously.

Also unless the discs are a pig to do like on an old shape Hyundai Accent then it makes sense to take a belt and braces approach.

Nothing wrong in theory by just changing pads, but if a pair of discs are under £30 then you may aswell change them, as the pads will last longer with fresh discs.

I have seen pads that had outlasted the discs recently, which was an unusual situation, unless the car had a pad change that the owner was unaware of.

Interesting thread. Will make sure I don't get ripped off and pay £200-250 for pads and discs again!

I was £120 3 months ago for back pads and discs on my Renault Megane. I had a little look around online before I got them done at my local garage, and this seemed to be an average price.

Easy enough to do them on the driveway, but just check if you need a T55 Torx socket (as not something a lot of people have at home) or 19mm socket to remove the caliper bolts and pop a dab of threadlock on them when you reassemble. Oh adab of coopper grease on the contact points of the pads to dampen vibration to minimise squealing.

It isn't unusual for a quick fit clutch place to turn around clutch jobs in a morning,
Vauxhall Chavalier (no, that's not a spelling mistake) - 25 mins
XR3 (or any of it's derivatives on a 2 poster ramp) - under an hour with ease as there is no need to actually drop the box completely.

"Kwik Clutch" centres do it all day long, so they can probably name many more makes/models where shortcuts can be taken to get the job done quicker.

If you have some form of training/qualifications in motor vehicle engineering, I will be more than happy to pay you burger flipper wages to work on both our cars.

£9 an hour is the wage that "reputable" local garages are paying to qualified eastern european motor mechanics.

Was the original quote for Citroen parts? If so then it's not bad.

As for people quoting paying just £30 for discs and pads - well, would you trust your life with that quality of parts? Worth paying for decent brakes.
