Brake pads & discs

My car came through its MOT yesterday with an advisory that my brake pads & discs have about 2 months life left in them. Apparently it wasn't enough to fail my MOT but they won't last until the next service (I had the service done at the same time as the MOT).

I've been quoted £214 to get them replaced (this is from the garage where the MOT was conducted). What I want to know is whether this price is reasonable? I'm not great with cars and I've made a mistake of allowing myself to be ripped off in the past because I went with the first quote I was given. I'm not financially in a position where I can afford to spend more than I need to, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Its not a bad price for an average car but without knowing the car its hard to judge. If your driving an aston martin its very cheap....
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

    What car is it?
Dealer disc and pad kit for my Zafira is about £100 retail, and about 2 hours labour, so that's the top price. You could beat it, so I'd get a few quotes.
To be fair to the garage though, they put it down as an advisory, not a fail, so it doesn't sound as though they are bad.

    Nah, well expensive.

Check buypartsby for parts prices(remember to add VAT on website prices)

Also check German, Swedish and French and Euro Car Parts.

If you are near Romfors the new Euro Car Parts in Harold Hill is charging not much more than trade prices to build up the business.

Got a Bosch Air filter and Oil filter for the wifes Clio DCi for under £15 last week, cheap enough for me, would probably have been double for similar quality parts ina Renault box, if not more.

I am goung to quickly check buypartsby, i will report back in a minute.

They've just passed an MOT as has the whole braking system. I'd run them for now, but start shopping around for prices and put money aside for it.
ANY difference in braking performance (pedal gets softer, any new noise etc) and get them checked out immediately.

Is this discs and pads all around?

You're talking approx £50 per pair for a set, and 1-2 hours labour so about £150 would be about right I would have thought. Perhaps £200 for good quality discs/pads.

surely you have a little back street style garage somewhere near you, ask them to supply and fit, im sure itll be a lot less than that.

you can buy disc and pad set online for about £50 and they resonable quality too.

    look around.

Thanks all - it's the front two that need replacing.

I'm thinking of getting them replaced sooner rather than later as my financial position will be a little different in a couple of months time. But thanks for the advice, it really helps to be given a heads up on what I should expect to pay.

    Pads are £14:21+vat

    Discs £8:85 each + vat.
Not sure the make, but the above is for 2003, 1.1 engined Citreon C2.

    Standard Ebc pads £13:42+vat

Greenstuff pads(not really needed) £38:50+ vat

Ebc discs £11:92 each + vat

Ebc turbo groove disc(not really needed) £34:58 each +vat.

Parts certainly not expensive so looks like nigh on £150 for less than an hours labour!

    Ah -- just the front...

I've had the job done on a Primera before, with a bunch of other stuff done at the same time, for £60 all-in. So £200+ is a bit excessive IMO.
