Brake pads & discs

I ran a garage for long enough and worked on my own cars for long enough to appreciate the difference between the time it takes a home mechanic working at home to do a job and the time it takes a garage mechanic with all the right tools to do a job. Power tools are just one thing that makes things easy, then if you consider the time saved by having a two post life you can easily see how such jobs can be turned round pretty quick.
It isn't unusual for a quick fit clutch place to turn around clutch jobs in a morning, but they would take a home mechanic a weekend.
I would expect a mechanic to take under an hour to do a simple disc and pad change on a C2, I would allow more on a PITA car like a Hyundai Accent due to the discs being a nightmare to get off, you should take a look at one in a breakers yard if the wheels are off, they are seriously like something from a miniature commercial vehicle!
Brake jobs like this are bread and butter, though some garages try to make stupid profits off such jobs, I preferred to make money from repeat business rather than over charge every customer like many garages like to do.
I wouldn't pay the price the OP was quoted to change discs and pads on my previous Subaru Legacy, let alone a little french city car, from memory I think the C2 has Lucas calipers, not exactly unusual technology.
Lots of different cars have very similar brakes on the front.
We'll be round at yours then.
If you do brake lines, I've got a couple I reckon it would take the garage a couple of hours as well, so that's on the cards too.0 -
Are you just on the wind up, your post does nothing for ths thread, whats the matter, somebody posted up unbiased, helpful advice and it has somehow put your nose out of joint.
Where has anybody other than you mentioned brake lines.
Look if it takes you two hours to do a one hour job then fine.
If you ran a garage and you mechanics took two hours to do a simple brake job on a Citreon C2 then you are employing the wrong staff and going to go bust, or you are going to do what the OP's garage have done, which is try to overcharge a customer.
Your efforts at being a smart !!!! have sadly fallen very far short and are nothing but a waste of a comment.0 -

Well, we all posted unbiased, helpful advice, the price the op had is the very top end.
We told her the price for the parts, you toddled off to google, and quoted prices ex vat without delivery, then worked out what we said was correct.
You then came back, said you could do it faster, fair enough. Do it for the op for the hour, or go back to being the keyboard warrior.
Enough though, the op has the answer, I'm sure your musing on your (or someones) past will be entertaining for a while.
Tonight I'm not in the mood for you.0 -
No, I never said I could do it faster I think you need to reread my posts to see what i actually posted.
I said an hour is the time a garage should take to do a simple pad and disc change.
It is the time I would allow a mechanic if I still ran a garage.
Or do you think that we should let people think it takes 2 hours to do a simple front disc and pad change?
But, yes it would take me an hour give or take to do a front end disc and pad change, as you also said it would take you an hour or two then I fail to see your point.
A home mechanic taking two hours to do discs and pads is expected as they don't have the proper tools and a two or four post ramp.
Your "not in the mood for me tonight", what is that some kind of threat, you better watch you are letting your true character show a bit much tonight.
And I can assure you I am no keyboard warrier, you are the one the gets the !!!! when somebody using personal experience to give advice.
You now know that a decent garage workshop manager would allow his mechanic an hour to do a front pad and disc change.
You will notice that you are the one the has gone straight for the !!!!!! comments, then moved right along to abuse.0 -

This bit make me laugh.
"We told her the price for the parts, you toddled off to google, and quoted prices ex vat without delivery, then worked out what we said was correct."
I did as I said i would, check exact prices on a site that i have used before, but also mentioned that they may charge delivery, as in fact many internet money saving websites do, you will note that i also mentioned places where she could get the parts at similar prices if not less actually.
This is called adding detail to a discussion, not saying you were, wrong, which I didn't, but adding extra evidence to show that your estimated price is correct.
I can hardly go down to GSF or ECP at this time of night could I, and to be honest why should I.
So what you are saying is you have the !!!! because I got more accurate prices that confirmed you were correct with your estimate, I never said your estimate of around £50 was wrong now did I.
Not sure why you bother posting mikey, you get the !!!! when people agree with your or disagree with you from what I can see.
But if you expect me to suck up to you then you are on a long road to nowhere.0 -
Lol, some advice and a bit of entertainment

I think there will be a GSF or ECP near you, try asking at a small independant garage how much to fit pads and discs, if you supply the parts.
It is only an hours worth of work, bread and butter to most little independant garages.
Though remember that the old "your brakes need done soon" line is often used to ensure you come back to them, at £214 for discs and pads fitted they will be waiting for you I'm sure.
All prices shown and the other estimates are retail prices really, even though a lot cheaper than true main dealer retail prices, if your garage was to supply the parts aswell they would get a little off those prices, but the invoice would probably quote parts prices as near £100, there is nothing illegal about selling parts to customers at retail when you got them at trade, but bringing your own parts does allow you to negotiate for the labour to fit them, though some garages don't like fitting customer supplied parts.
Cheapest solution would be buy the parts and get them fitted by a friend or relative, even mikey72 can get them changed for you, though he may take longer than some
