WHAT!!?? Just seen a recipe stating that a tin of TUNA is 24p!
Where the heck do you buy your tuna from? Tesco Value/smart price tuna is between 60p-75p and Aldi 59p where I live.
Would love to know where I could buy it at that price - I love it!0 -

1/2 onion 3p
1 tsp oil
1/2 cup rice (value rice) 4.5p
1 cup water
1 tin cheap tuna 24p
1 egg 10p
1/2 cup frozen peas 9p
Dice onion and fry off in largish saucepan in the oil. When translucent add the rice and stir round for a minute (keep heat reasonably low) Add 1 cup water and bring to the boil.
(this is important)Put lid on the pan and reduce heat to as low as you can. Leave it like that for ten minutes. Do not lift lid or stir rice.
After ten minutes quickly lift the lid, add the frozen peas, and replace lid and leave for 5 more minutes. Don't worry about stirring the peas in - they will cook.
Meanwhile, hardboil egg in seperate pan, cool, peel and chop.
Heat up beans in microwave or in the egg pan once you have cooked the egg.
(receipe was used alot when I only had 2 pans!!)
Once rice and peas have cooked (lift lid and tip pan, there should be no excess water in the pan) stir in egg, beans, and drained tin of tuna. Season to taste and enjoy!
NB this method of cooking rice works for all rice dishes. If just doing plain rice, no need to add peas (obviously) and simmer with lid on for 15 mins total. (on lowest heat possible). then check rice by tipping the pan for excess water - should be all gone and rice nice and fluffy to be enjoyed!!
No you won't get the prices stated in a lot of the posts now but most meals will still be cheap to make although not at the 50p for 2 like they were.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -

If you have a B&M near you they do a 3 pack of tuna flakes in water for 99p, name is Ocean Bay and weight says 170g net ( that is per tin) so with them you could with basics pasta and a dash or two of olive oil and some herbs make up a meal that is just around 50p for one person.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Egg chips & beans...the staple of yoof when I was growing up!! (now the post pub Friday nite snack!lol)
When we decided we would get a car again ( 1999) we bought a tray of eggs, a sack of potatoes and the then 9p baked beans and ate them twice a day for a week so we could afford the tax that we hadn't budgeted for. Got a bit boring but we made it through. Not a healthy choice but a quick cheap meal. Probably twice the price these days.
£50 is tough but here are my two that probably cost under £2 for 4.
Pea and ham pasta. Save a chunk of roast gammon. ( little over plum sized)
Cook pasta
In another pan cook 150ml left over cream with a little Parmesan,
paprika, diced gammon and couple handfuls of frozen peas. Stir into cooked pasta.
Stroganoff.
Put rice on to cook with a few shakes of dried parsley.
Whilst rice cooking fry mushrooms with parsley and paprica. Add dark meat from roast chicken( can be frozen ) and stir in a desert spoon of flour. Slowly add chicken stock(made from cube usually) and simmer.
Add handful of frozen peas of sweetcorn to rice for last 3 mins cooking. Stir two tablespoons if creme fraiche into sauce before serving.0 -

So glad this thread is still going. Thanks for all the ideas. These are a few of my meals we have when times are tough. Not that healthy but cheap and filling.
Vegetable lasagna
I use any veggies that are cheap, left over, or need using up. I usually look at reduced yellow stickers. Fry them up with an onion, add tin of value tin tomatoes, few herbs. The cheese topping is done quite frugally. I use half the usual amount of cheese but add a dollop of mustard to give it colour and flavour. If I'm pushing the boat out I'll top it with sliced tomatoes before putting it in the oven.
brie and bacon spaghetti
cook value spaghetti, add fried bacon and onions, add brie and let it melt into a creamy coating. Serve with (yellow sticker or homemade) crusty bread.
Tuna sweetcorn lasagna - Tuna and sweetcorn with tin tomatoes and herbs made into lasagna
Pizza
Value pizza base (31p). Use 1/4 tin of value tin tomatoes (freeze the rest for another day) mushed up with a good dollop of tomato ketchup or tomato puree (10p). Sprinkle with cheese (I always use reduced yellow sticker cheese frozen in portions). I then add any topping of things that need using up. Chicken pieces (the little bits left over from a roast) with frozen sweetcorn, tomatoes and strips of sandwhich ham, bacon pieces. I serve with value garlic bread (37p)
My mums potato, onion, tomato pie
Pastry case filled with mash potato, fried onion, handful of grated cheese, topped with sliced tomatoes. Browned in oven and served with baked beans. You can add bacon pieces if you want to go mad.0 -
Also remembered this: Garlic and herb chicken pasta (*serves 2 in our house with leftovers for lunch)
leftover roast chicken £2.59/5 = 52p
mushrooms 89p 1/2 pack = 45p
1/2 bag value pasta 15p
1/2 pack garlic & herb soft cheese 29p
garlic baguette 39p
brocolli and carrot 20p
total £2.00 = £1 per person with leftovers for lunch0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

Tesco have got their value spaghetti (dried variety)on offer as BOGOF at the mo-2 500g packs for 35p. Thats enough for 10 servings of 100g each which is what I use. I do weigh out pasta and rice to avoid waste!
Lidl do pasata cheap-last time I looked it was 29p for 500ml but may be 39p now. They also sell dried oregano in a glass jar for just 49p and garlic granules(not horrible garlic salt)real dried garlic also 49p approx. I keep these as staples. Add whatever whoopsied mince, soya(dried)vegimince or just veggies to this and you should get a serving for 50p per person. Top off with strong chees(you use less of it). Tesco have Australian cheddar on offer at present for under £5 per kilo.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0
