Blitz on Disabled Parking Cheats by Supermarkets

No one suggested that supermarkets are even going to become involved at all other than agreeing collectively to a clamping operation being licensed on their private property.
No supermarket in their right mind would institute enforceable clamping on their own land unless they could do so at arms length from the ' chav type ' screaming you've clamped me mota mate !
There are [ see #8 ] already three major national companies providing what they call ' services ' to the LA's. In my own area for example amongst many other council administrative functions the whole blue badge system start to finish is administered by Mouchel. A company called BBFi is already up and running specialising in blue badge offenders for two [ Manchester and Wandsworth ] area authorities, but currently do not do supermarkets for the reasons stated.
I'd like to see all supermarkets agree without legislation, and if they don't agree I'd like legislation brought in to force them to accept the European standard for both BB use, and the protection of the BB user. In fact I'd like those who are not BB holders who park in a BB space face a criminal offence in addition to a local by-law or civil fine. BB bays are that size because of the room needed to have an already large door open at 45 degrees to allow the disabled to disembark, and not damage the vehicle next to it, real estate is expensive and the supermarkets cost out the disabled bay as one and a half normal bays, that would cut their potential profits by 50%. To have all bays BB size is both unrealistic and unnecessary and is never going to happen.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I have just been watching Fake Britain on BBCiplayer, there is an interesting part funnily enough about blue badges and their misuse, it starts at around 35 minutes into the programme the link is:

I'm sorry, but you could argue that they should provide bigger spaces for all cars. We all don't drive dinky toys! I have a Range Rover that just about fits. It cost me in excess of £70,000!!
Yes I see your point, but on the other hand I don't want to come back and find that some wally with his beaten up old Fiesta has slammed into my car door!
If you want me to, I'll take up two spaces instead like I have to in some car parks - notably Halfords and Homebase.0 -

So, what is the answer for me and the 1,000's of other owners of large 4x4's?
Now, I would say that if because of the size of the space my vehicle is damaged, and if the supermarket would accept responsibility for that damage because of the space they provided, I would park in a normal space.
But I'm blowed if I'm going to have a never ending increase in my insurance premium every year because of claims I would have to make, they can think again.
I would be very happy if the likes of Sainsburys would cough up every time it is damaged!
Are you disabled / and / or / a blue badge holder ?
If you are not then I don't have an answer for you, its a choice and you are perfectly entitled to it my friend .. .. your 4x4 that is.
Heck I've no objection to you running an RV or a Peterbilt but like I said its a choice if you can't safely park it that's not Asda's fault and it certainly is not mine. Why should Asda pay someone who tries to stick a quart into a pint pot, they provide an agreed standard size parking place for non BB holders, if you don't like what's on offer for free - don't shop there ! If they pay anyone just once every scammer in the country will be charging up their satnav and heading for that store.
Of course if they did pay people like you, the price of their products would have to go up for the rest of us to compensate, including people without cars - who are usually but not always the poorest in society, lets call this group ' financially disabled ' who can't afford any car at all, they may not be disabled but they are disadvantaged - they can't afford any car let alone a Chelsea tractor.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. This is all very well, but how are the supermarkets going to be able to distinguish which vehicles belong to disabled customers? Are they going to insist on the use of the blue badge? What about disabled customers who don't have one?
Do you think that if you are unlucky enough to receive a ticket incorrectly the PPC will tell you not to bother paying? Unlikely - they just want cash, and they don't care who it comes from.
On another point - I wonder if the lady on the radio was Helen Dolphin from the charity formerly known as Mobilise?

Read the thread. The supermarkets do nothing, a private nasty clamper does the deed. You can't receive a ticket incorrectly. You are either in compliance with your blue book rules and your blue badge display or you get ticketed. Photographic evidence in real time will be enough for the courts and the fines companies.
Disabled customers who don't have a blue badge have no right whatsoever to park in a BB disabled bay, by definition they are not sufficiently disabled to have applied for a BB. If any disabled person feels they are sufficiently disabled and need the help a BB offers and can satisfy their LA's requirements they should apply.
If the PPC just want the wonka .. .. good .. .. the greedier and more ruthless they are the more protection for legitimate BB holders.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. The issue is that is discriminates against those disabled persons (as defined within legislation, not someone with a broken leg) who do not have one. There is no law that says that a disabled person MUST apply for a blue badge, as far as I know, or any system that automatically provides a disabled person with a blue badge.
Richie - you think it's OK for a car park owner to discriminate against a genuinely disabled individual, simply because they do not have a blue badge? That seems a bit mean. And you think that disabled people don't get ticketed? There are plenty of examples on the parking forum.0 -
I am mobility impaired (can't bring myself to say disabled!), don't have a blue badge (not even attempted to get one...that disabled word again) and I never park in a disabled spot at the supermarket, unless I am taking my dad to the shop...he has a blue badge but is not allowed to drive any more.
My trick is to go quite early in the morning, find a spot where there are two vacant spaces and park...then hope that no idiot has parked within 5 inches of my car on my return. I need to have plenty of room to open the door wide or I can't get in or out of the car!
I only ever use the parent and child spots when I have a child with me, the rest of the time, I use the general parking spots. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
