Is your phone & broadband provider any good?

The problem with my broadband is not my supplier (virgin) it is the state of the fixed line. (BT). We have baud rates of 0.8mb/s. I am paying for "unlimited broadband up to 1 Mbps" but this is the same price as someone having speeds of over 20 times faster than this. The excuse I am always given is that I am too far from the exchange (about 3 miles).

This is not the fundamental problem though, as my house, unless there is an unusual earthquake that moves my house 3 miles, will always be three miles from the current exchange.

What is needed is some fundamental strategic rethink about customer service. What about some more localized exchanges so that people are no longer "so far from the exchange". Or addressing the issue that the BT lines are old copper ones and not "new" fibre optic ones. BT has had a plan to lay fibre optic cables throughout the country for the last 30 years - they just haven't done it.

So in this poll I have given my broadband supplier top marks because they give an excellent service with what is available. And my fixed line BT poor service marks for the reasons above.

    Anyone else got this problem?

A local loop of 3 miles is not that far. people are getting better connection speeds at further distances.

Check to see what other ISP facilities are offered by your local exchange at https://www.samknows.net

Does your exchange have any LLU providers, e.g. Sky or TalkTalk? The LLU operators tend to have installed newer and better DSLAMs than BT, and these can offer faster speeds, even over longer distances.

Has anybody heard of XLN the nightmare of my life? every time you try to move they change the contract date, their customer service is terrible, in fact they downright do not tell the truth, in fact i'm nearly thinking it could be worth the £260 charge just to be rid of them

Can we have IDNET added please? I'm very happy with them - 38Mb down, 8Mb up.
  • With Post Office, you also get free calls to mobiles & free international calls at weekends, both for no extra charge. Plus free 0845/0870 evening & weekend calls...and the evening time still starts at 6pm. (usual 1hour call time)

Neither is mine - Pipex. :(

Pipex needs an abysmal category all of its own.

My recent IP isn't there though (Fast) which means the poll assumes I don't have Internet!

Yes - but it still operates as Demon: http://www.demon.net/

Appalling customer service, and the so-called 'technical support team' (based in India and utterly useless) is only open from 0800 to 2000. So if your broadband packs up at 2000 you've got a 12 hour wait before you can even talk to them.

Demon used to be one of the very best. Now it's one of the worst. Reviews here:

I couldn't agree more. I was with Demon for years and they were great up until Cable & Wireless bought them, then they went right down the toilet. I switched to O2 and they are great. I pay about 30% less than with Demon and get 4 times the speed on the same line.
  • I use The Phone Co-op for phone and broadband and am quite happy with them - could you add them to the list please?

It should not have excluded 'price' from the survey - the only way to do this fairly was to include questions which also asked what you thought about the price factor too! - otherwise its obvious the results will be distorted or at the very least tempered by the issue of price alongside 'how good is it'....

Wow look at that Tiscali poll (is Pipex included?) I will direct customer services to this poll.

Could this be the worst company ever?

Switched from BT to Primus a couple of months ago and really wish I hadn't. Signed up for a £7.99 a month line rental & evening and weekend calls but there have been hidden charges added making it no cheaper than BT. The customer service is atrocious, not interested in helping just in getting your payment & it appears that they don't know what they're talking about. They tried hiding the extra charges by saying it was for payment in advance even though I paid the advance on the first bill. I had to ask the advisor 5 times to put me in touch with a manager and eventually he reluctantly arranged a call back from a manager. I would switch back to BT without hesitation if it wasn't for the 12 month contract. BT may work out about £1.50 more expensive per month for the same package but at least they charge what you agreed to. I wouldn't recommend Primus to anyone.
