Cor blimey! What a fun post! ;)

For my two pence worth, I have no kids and have worked blooming hard to where I've got myself. I agree that if you are desperate, money should be used if it is there.

But I tell you what, if I gave money to someone expecting them to buy something for their kids and they paid off their debt with it, I would see it as them using MY money to fund their debt when I could have kept it for myself!!

    Mortgages (End 2017) - £180,235.03
    (End 2021) - £131,215.25 DID IT!!!
    (End 2022) - Target £116,213.81
  • I havent read all of this thread and I dont have children yet... I think the money is for the kids so it should be spent on benefitting the kids - it doesnt have to be spent for x-mas just because it is given at x-mas if they already have loads of toys why not put it in a bank and then it could be used for the times they desperately want to go on a school trip or go to the fair sometime next year when you're budget cant really stretch to accommodate their request.
I think its a bit different if you were personally given money as a present that would be your choice if you wanted to buy yourself a gift/treat or payoff a debt. If the money never arrived this year - your debts/bills would still be there and you would still have to find away.
on the other hand there is the argument that family is one so all the money and resources is one and should go to where it is needed most?
you should do what you feel most comfortable with - would you continue to feel really guilty a year later if you used the money for bills and stuff? - I dont know?
:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j
  • Just thought I'd add my thoughts.

Myself and my sister both had savings pots when we were growing up and we both between us paid for a new computer for the house out of it when we were living at home.

Our parents asked us if we would as we wanted one and we were the only ones who would use it!

We never had a problem and the computer is still at my parent's house (I'm 25 now and my sister is 20) and it can stay there!

I would prefer "my" money not being used to pay a debt but if it meant happy, stress free parents then so be it.

I suggest you get some bunk beds and put the rest towards some thing they may need in the future.

    Merry Xmas!!
    cooler bag/£30 Chat mag/Pantene pack /Xmas meal /10 real people mag. /Nivea xmas pack! /3 cadbury cream eggs./£25 real people /.Loreal bronzing balls.£25 real people mag/Thomas Cook holiday/£1000 joe browns clothes/nandos platter/chambord/4 mcfc ticks/2 night deluxe glamping/2 cineworld ticks/2 nail varnishes/Giraffe Vouchers/Caribbean Cruise!
  • Personally I'd use the money to get the bunk beds, and put the remainder in their bank accounts/trust funds etc. I would feel far too guilty using towards my debts and I don't think my family would be too pleased if I used the kids money to pay off the Egg card.

Obviously if the house is freezing and theres no food in the cupboards, its a different story but the OP hasn't stated that she's struggling.
If you like it, do it.

I think I will ask my family and the in-laws to give my son money this year for Christmas.
I can then take it off him to pay for the weekly shop.
What a wheeze, I shall also use any birthday money he gets to reduce my overdraft.
Why stop there - I shall move an eldery relative into the house and fleece their bank accounts, after all, it is only sitting in the bank account.
I may never have to work again.
  • I suppose you bank your child benefit as well, its money for the kids not you. How about child tax credit that is also meant for the child. Come on advent get real.
