I guess Lidl is just for those of us with a tight budget, because there ARE things in there that are much cheaper than elsewhere for the same quality.

Interesting thread this......now I'll admit to being a monumental food snob..life's too short to drink bad wine/eat cruddy food......but whilst I like a bargain and am a massive fan of Tesco;s R&R policy, I can't be doing with my local Morrisons....Uggh! Aldi and Lidl in my area are even worse....BUT.....go to one of these abroad and it's absolute heaven! They're bright, clean, great customer service....etc...etc....yet somehow they've not carried that over in the UK. If they did, I'd shop there permanently from tomorrow.

I used to be a dedicated Sainbury's fan....then I moved and my nearest shop was Tesco and I thought they were CHEAP in comparison! I know there are cheaper shops....but we all have our preferences......LOVE M&S food by the way - just refuse to pay those prices.

I think everyone has their own personal preferences. I'm prepared to go to Lidl because I desperately want to get out of debt and if going to a different supermarket saves me loads of money I'll do it.
I went to Lidl for the first time on Saturday and everything we have bought has been very good and very cheap so I will be going again.
Maybe I'm lucky having a good Lidl near me - only ever been in the one. If other people prefer M&S etc I have no problem with that - I can't afford to shop in M&S if I am going to get out of debt :(

  • My answer to the OP's original question "Are you too snobbish to shop at Lidl?" is NO! Absolutely not. There just isn't one anywhere near me so I use Tesco instead and actually do quite well with my food budget these days by choosing some items from the value range, picking through the reduced items and looking for BOGOFs.

I shop wherever is cheapest at the time, I have found LIDLS prices have increased a lot recently and the availability of items in my local store is shocking. I find ALDI sometimes cheaper. They also don't do the BOGOF etc offers you get in other stores. Tescos/Asda/Sainsburys value products are usually close if not cheaper than the ALDI/LIDL stores. Netto is cheap too. I do a lot online if there are decent codes on the forum, which knocks a huge chunk off, and the reduced section in local Somerfields (because it's quite quiet and they over order) is sometimes worth a look :) 80% off everything I bought this weekend. I also get fruit and veg delivered to the door which is handy, always fresh and lasts ages (unlike LIDLS where the kiwis last week were just a ball of mould stinking the store out)

My view - shop around and shop around some more!
One day I might be more organised...........

  • We generally shop at Tesco and Iceland. We are far from snobs and have tried Lidl and Aldi but tend to find the quality with some of their stuff just not up to scratch (i.e. grisly bits of meat in pizzas etc). I also wonder where a lot of their meat is sourced as some countries animal welfare rights are abysmal (i.e. when it comes to breeding and slaughter). I'd rather pay a bit more to know the meat I'm eating came from an animal that was treated reasonably humanely. So no I'm not a food snob, but try and weigh up money saving with ethical issues.

i live in acton nearest lidil is hanwell, we have a netto in acton. i go there but not much choice with the frozen food. bread is cheap, turkey escalopes cheaper than mark up price in tesco only 10p, i use a big ikea bag.so dont buy any bags...... i like netto, do try to do alternate weeks with it, with tesco.
i will be debt free, i will
  • Not snobbery just practicality.

    Lidl
    - none where I live, pay the occasional visit when I'm back in Sunderland,
    KwikSave - filthy & doesn't have a car park,
Netto - going there means passing Tesco, KwikSave, M&S, Morrisons & Asda - Its a bit cheaper but not that much cheaper.
Aldi - Used to be quite good & cheap but prices are going up & quality down. I've been very disappointed with my last food shops from there to the point where I won't be going back for food.
Iceland - no car park & as my kitchen is tiny I don't have a freezer just an Icebox in the fridge so bulk buying there is a false economy.

Basically theres a Tesco at the end of my street & if I keep an eye on the mis-priced items thread & research the bogof, 3 for 2, 2 for £x & double clubcard points deals on their website before I go then I can eat well for the same sort of spend as in those discount stores. I pay with a clubcard plus card so get double the points of a standard clubcard & combined with the double points on my petrol I get enough vouchers for a month of free food each year.
