Are you too snobbish to shop at Lidl ? You might be giving your money away !

I have stolen this from another thread (apologies) 'just discovered Lidl' and after reading that begs one question -

Why are / were so many of us (myself included until 18 months ago) snobs when it comes to shopping at supermarkets when we are all in debt ?

We are just giving our money away to these big corporations ie Tesco, Morrisons etc and not even enjoying a lot of what we buy ! But because of our attitude we won't go into the likes of Lidl, Aldi etc !

It's madness !

Reading 'just discovered Lidl' proves you can spend less, get better value AND quality.

My neighbours, who have to watch every penny and work very hard, won't go in Lidl because they think it's a bit !!!!!! and smells funny ! Yet they have always complimented us on the bits and pieces they have eaten here without realising that's where we get them from (ie stollen / brioche).

To save up to a grand a year - that's only £20 a week - I have more than happily put up with all the downsides of Lidl. Come to think of it, there aren't any, the shops full and the staff are polite and helpful and you can park right outside !!

For those of you who won't consider shopping at Lidl etc, lose your snobbish guard and get in there. Considering we are all in debt and looking for ways to cut back on expenditure yet not lose our standard of living, I cannot believe people like giving their money away when they do have a really viable alternative.

Lidl are great value, have a varied selection of items that you will really enjoy and the quality outstrips Tesco etc - it's your money, why not enjoy what you get and stop giving it away ?

As usual, I shall await your valued opinions !!
Ps I am not MD of Lidl !!
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

Sadly my nearest Lidl is 13 miles away, so I think what I saved in shopping, would be spent on fuel....

Every time I've gone I've been disappointed with the things I've bought. Much prefer Asda.

Our nearest Lidl is about 18 miles away so too far but we do go to Aldis regularly - 9 miles away.We have to travel to get to any supermarket as we live in a small country town.Morrisons is also 9 miles away so we tend to do both at the same time.Tesco is 10 miles away in other direction but as I work near I often go there too.I try to find the best in all 3 shops!;) and spread my money around!I'm not posh, I'll shop anywhere to save money!:D

I don't think Lidl / Aldi are always that much cheaper / if actually at all cheaper! I find it too easy to shop their and assume everthing is cheaper but when you look at price / quality / quantity it isn't always the case!

I do very occasionally shop in lidl, but there have been a fe wproblems

    1) I bought a load of chicken and it was all off - wont be making that mistake again!
    2) its in a funny place for me- even though its fairly close its 3 buses away
    3) I get better vfm in tescos, with thier reductions, R&R etc.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • I've not done Lidl's yet but am now a converted Aldi fan. And I used to think Tesco was cheap (compared to Sainsburys)

It all started when I was at a friends having a girlie night in with my friends and my friend started harping on about the joys of Aldi. When I last went years ago, it wasnt that good and hadnt been back since but she convinced me to try it and I've not looked back since.

We were all talking about how much we spend and most of my friends (in couples admitedly) spend at least £250 per month!! I could nt believe it!

I spend about £75 per month (for 1) and I always have plenty of food.

I think some people think that only the 'posh' supermarkets sell nice things and that it needs to be in pretty packages to be any good! More fool them!

    Same here.
  • Not snobbish, but I am vegetarian and I find that the fresh fruit and veg in my local is far from fresh if there is any at all! I tend to get mine locally or in a big asda shop.
