Then you're on a winner. Send the e-mail and keep the butter until one of the EH people comes out to you. Then phone the manufacturer and tell them what you've done and wait for the compo offers. Tell them you're thinking of taking advice.

Compo for what exactly? How much do you think this is worth, GlynD?

A replacement pack of butter would put the OP back in the position that he was before he found the splinter.

I think I have done this all wrong, I emailed EH and then emailed the company with a complaint email (Im at work see)

Im not used to this, should I release the butter to the company if they ask for it? EH have replied saying let the company deal with it and if im not happy to contact them as Im not sure if it was bought in 1 of 2 supermarkets?

What are you hoping to achieve?

    Compensation?
    Punishment of the company?
Just letting them know so that they can prevent a repeat?

If you are being a good citizen and letting them know so that they can make sure it doesn't happen again, then you just need to contact the company.

If you have other objectives I'll let someone else answer.

If this follows the usual path there will now be a flood of people finding telegraph poles in their pat of breakfast butter !

I found some maggots in some Porcini mushrooms last week. A polite e-mail to the company with a picture of said maggots resulted in £10 worth of vouchers being sent to me on Friday. I didn't ask for any compensation or demand recompense, I simply stated that maggots were found and I'd be returing the 'shrooms to the store I bought them for a refund or exchange. Nice lady e-mailed me back in a couple of days explaining the inspection and packing procedure of the 'shrooms, apologised for the maggots and offered to send some vouchers. Quick, simple and I was pleased with the outcome.

Sometimes it's better to e-mail the company involved stating the problem and just let them decide what action they're going to take. I have found that if you e-mail politely you're often offered some vouchers. (Not, I hasten to add, that I do this on a regular basis! I think I've done it three times in my 34 years on this Earth! ;) ) I don't think you really need to get the HSE involved; these things happen from time to time. At least you saw it and didn't accidentally eat it! Although if you're eating butter out of the tub with a spoon... ;)

I have emailed the company direct as the EH have asked me to and will just wait.

    That's right.

HSE are more relevant for caf!s, restaurants or shops where just not using them again might leave others exposed to bad practice.

Were you putting the butter on a bread stick?
