My girlfreind and I were making some cookies last night and at the end of the butter we found a huge splinter of wood/chunk of wood embedded within the butter
It is a named brand and we are not sure if we complain to the supermarket we bought it from or direct from the manufacturer.
can someone point me in the right direction, also should we take a photograph or anything of the offending item?

You can complain to the manufacturer, the supermarket or trading standards. The choice is entirely yours.
I'd write to the manufacturer, just to inform them, preferably with a photograph, so that they can take steps to avoid a repeat occurrence - although it sounds like a one in a billion event. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Why were you putting butter on cookies?
They were making them, not eating them!
BTW, OP, there's not much point in using 'light' butter in cooking because all 'light; butter is is butter with water added. Since the water will leave the butter as the temperature rises you will just end up with a mixture that has less fat and more moisture. Of course, this can work if the quantities are still within limits but it's a bit pointless as light butter is not noticeably cheaper than ordinary so you are just paying for water! There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Environmental Health, straight away, no hesitation. It may result in your getting wads of compensation but that's not the issue. How many other people could be affected, what about kids eating it? I urge you to phone your local council's Environmental Health team straight away.0

At least it wasn't Anchor.
You may well have ended up with a lump of metal instead.0 -

Is it worth emailing them as im in work till late? I have found my local contact for them but the butter was bought at least a month ago so surely if it was in other packs they would know about it?All hail the Jack Daniels Swozzler!:beer:0 -

If you no longer have the butter you're on a beaten docket straight away. Apart from that e-mailing would be fine.0
