I was going to buy a Panda - they're solid little motors.

Didn't because it came down to numbers at the end of the day, nothing else.

What a load of old cobblers! I've owned (personally) over 10 Fiats since 1978 ranging from a 127 to my present one; Punto mk2 HGT which I have owned from new in 2000. Its just done 60k miles and the only main expence is a cam belt change. It runs like a dream and loves motorways as the temp gauge is lower than round town driving. In between i've had a Strada, 2 131's (one being a Supermirafiori), X/19, Uno SL, Uno Sx, Regata (Admitably that had some minor issues), Uno Turbo (Rocket Ship!), Croma, Punto Cabrio, Bravo HGT and a Coupe 16V. I also ran a small car business which had a nummber of Uno's and Tipo's but ok, they were all under 6 months old.

I can honestly say that with the exception of the Regata, mechanically I find that Fiats are exeptionally relaibale and any mechanic worth thier salt will agree that their engines are well built, especially when it comes to performance. i don't think that with my above list, you could say that I was lucky.

It's not just Fiats and Ka's, though. Every single French car made is similarly slagged off!!!! Amazing.

Maybe that's because they have had experience of them, not just blindly jumping on the bandwagon and rattling off the usual meaningless hearsay?

Perhaps the overpriced Germanic offerings have something to hide??

It wasnt so long ago that Mercedes were in talks with Fiat over them producing the small Mercedes cars, guess what, Mercedes pulled out over the costs, now what does that tell you???

It tells me Mercedes decided the quality/cost ratio wasnt good enough :p

And it's not jumping on the bandwagon, Im a Mechanic and see Broken French and Italian cars more than any other (Oh exept the persistantly mot failing ka's because they start their rusting the day they leave the factory line)

Not everyone has problems with Fiat obviously, Some cars are ok some are not but on the whole It is known world wide that the italians and french make poor quality cars (Yes even ferrari's are known for poor reliabilty, Look it up if you dont believe me), Here are a few exerts from cnet reviews (One of if not the biggest review sites online) 'Chrysler is betting its future on Fiat's vehicle expertise, but there's a problem: Fiat's quality is below average in Europe, according to a series of studies'

'Fiat posted low scores on J.D. Power and Associates' 2008 Customer Satisfaction Index studies for France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The respondents had owned their cars for about two years.'

'Fiat scored in the bottom quarter of more than 20 brands in the three countries in vehicle quality and reliability'

'Fiat has a reputation of having had quality issues over many years'

This is on Cnet (Wont let me post the link because im new grrr)

This is just the first site I found of thousands, I know people with french cars or Fiats will fight to the core that there is nothing wrong with the brands and obviously no-one wants to admit they are driving one of the poorest made cars around, I accept that but the facts are there.

On 'whatcar' guide fiat came 23rd out of 30 for reliability, Not good really in my opinion, Obviously Honda came first (Again)
More speciafically in the top 10 most reliable models NOT ONE french or italian car came in, They were all German or Japanese furthering my point

This data can be found by searching in google: what car reliability survey

Should anyone else wish to disagree with my years of experience please give some sources :-D

I don't need to give any source apart from my own experiences. Reviews may be ok for those who do not know what they are buying but fortunately I do and as far as I am concerned, your 'sources' certainly don't correspond with hard facts. If you dig deep enough, you will find flaws with any make and clearly that is what you are doing. I could'nt give a flying fig about your opinion about Fiat, all as I know (for sure) that since 1978, everyone I have owned (apart from the Regata) has been good which to me is proof that it is a good brand. What they are like in your part of the world though (Spain), I could not comment because I would not know what I would be talking about. A bit like what you are doing here.
    PLEASE NOTE

No, the reason according to the media was that Mercedes could manufacture for less than Fiat. Kind of suggests that Mercedes are all about branding!
