driving uninsured - help/advise

Part of the problem is this
1) We have as described the situation of getting insurance on chuckie to get a certificate then not paying so insurance company cancel insurance and Police told not to accept certificates as proof.
2) DATA PROTECTION ACT. To counter problems with 1), the Police are told to check the MIB database and then if not on there, phone the insurers. BECAUSE OF THE DATA PROTECTION ACT, the insurers are only allowed to give very sparse information as to why a policy has been cancelled and when asked if the motorist was notified, the answer is likely to be yes if a letter was shown as sent by the automated system. The problem lies in that there is no guarantee that the motorist actually receives that and the insurance companies do not put in place a system to record if it was received, i.e recorded delivery etc. So it could be the letter was sent but got lost/delayed in the post.
The vast majority of companies send the cancellation letters by recorded delivery letter to the customers last known address.
Unfortunately a lot of people with financial problems will refuse to accept recorded delivery letters and some know it's from their Insurers but think if they refuse to sign for it the cancellation will not happen0 -

Thank-you to everyone who took time to give me advised
I am insured – swinton still insuring me - The bank cancelled wrong direct debit. – but nobody will admit to being at fault
Yes have asked for £215 in cancelation fees.
Swintons now want £174 in cancelation fees
It has already cost me £150 to recover car
Formal complaint is being made against police offer involved, both insurers & the motor insurance database.0 -

If your covered and have proof there should have been no charge for recovery and storage. When you produced and all is in order they should have stamped your 165 form 'no charge'.0 -
I Insured My wifes car for her online, the policy starts at 0.01 hrs 1/06/11, as we still dont have documents and the post tommorow does not arrive until around 4pm I called the said company and asked if they had granted the policy and took down the name of the person I spoke to, I asked for a direct telephone number and an insurance reference policy number in case she gets stopped before we have the certificate and the car filters on to MIB database which can take a week or so.
I simply do not trust them not to turn around a week later and say oh no we never received payment or some excuse, all it takes is one phone call to establish you actually have insurance and get a policy number, in these days of the police attempting to extort as much cash as possible from us whilst sticking fingers in ears, it is a bit of good common sense to check that you are covered and make them confirm it on the phone that they record for training and security purposes.
It may not stop them seizing the car, but it may give you a damn good base for compensation if they do.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
