  • I never give my card details to Ancestry because of their track record, most 'free trials' request card details but there are free access deals which usually last for two days or so and you only have to enter your email in order to use them. Inquire at your local library to see if they have a subscription although my local has ditched Ancestry and gone with FindmyPast.

Ancestry are still at it with their sharp practice. My wife has been a family history enthusiast for many years. In March she took and paid for a 1 month subscription to Ancestry just to check a few details. Found it was not further use. Remember she went for a 1 month only deal. Now we find they have taken another payment. When challenged they claim they have an auto enrollment policy and refuse to cancel or refund. My wife paid with a debit card so we have no way of cancelling.
Ancestry is a company (what else would you expect from Yanks) with no ethics other than cheating and scamming. Thinly disguised thieves. I would not recommend anyone do business with them at all.

If it's a useful website that is worth its subscription costs, could I politely enquire as to why you've needed 72 months so far to find out the information you're looking for? I always assumed that most people would use Ancestry.com (or the like) for short-term investigation work? Our ancestry is one of the few things in life that doesn't change! :)

Careful. I'd say that was bordering the libellous.

I've been a member for about five years on and off and have always found them to be helpful and fair. I've cancelled with them before without a problem and they're always easy to get hold of on the phone.

I've had 2 trials with ancestry and have never had a problem unsubscribing.

However, I find a lot if information submitted on that site by users to be plainly incorrect. I wouldn't take things as gospel on any site until I had checked the sources.

Latest issue I've got is someone stating an ancestor married an 11 year old! no way to correct this and it comes up on the first search of the name. This means further idiots will take it as fact and the process of misinformation continues.
  • Why do the direct debit rules not apply, where you have to be notified in advance of any amount which will be taken? I too had £107 debited to my card. I have complained and they say it is being refunded. I suggested that perhaps they should have emailed me their intent to take the money.

Simply, it isn't a direct debit so those rules are irrelevant. It's a continuous payment authority which requires you to be told of the renewal when you create the payment. Unfortunately many people don't make a note of this. You can cancel the authority at any time and notify your bank not to make any future payments under the CPA.

Or use an old age device called a diary/ calender and make a note in/on it when you cancel the CPA. I personally use the calender on my phone and its never failed me yet.
