Anyone else get stung by these nest of scheming gits? I am surprised at such a well known website is acting so outragously. I joined up for their 14 day free trial and admittedly I didn't cancel it, but what they don't tell you is that they automaticaly put you on the "Delux World" Subscription and £69.95 is debited from your account!

Not only this but I've read numerous accounts on the net that they are deducting money left right and centre from peoples accounts, some of which claim to have never used an ancestry site in their life. (they are refered to as "MFI ancestry subs" on the cc statement, if you want to do your own search).

The site was also rubbish!

  • Sorry to be a pain, but you must always read the Terms before you sign up for anything.

    It clearly says the following:

2.2 Cancellations. Initial Annual Subscription. An initial annual subscription comes with the option to cancel during the first 7 working days and receive a full refund, unless the subscription began with a free trial period, in which case the provisions below apply. The 7 working-day period begins on the day you register for the subscription Service, which is also the day you are given access to the subscription area of the Service. If you subscribe to the Service following a free or other trial period, that trial period takes the place of the 7 working day cancellation period, and once the paid subscription begins, no refund will be provided
  • Yeah I know, which is why I'm not demanding a refund or anything. I'm just warning people that because it's a well known website (I'm seeing adverts for it on telly now) and the initial sign up page says nothing of the sort to watch out for them - especialy with regards to the experiences other people have had as I said in my previous post.

In my case I will have to swallow it as being one of the very few times I haven't paid attention! I have sent them an email (they also have an atrocious method of cancelation, how ever I feel more sorry for Americans as they have no choice but to ring up!) demanding that my account be cancelled and informng them that I shall be warning others about their third rate site with first rate fees!

(Besides I didn't read anything about 70 quid, and even once you're signed up it stills lists the price of "World Delux" subscription as "Special Price" - well it is special I'll give it that. I wont forget it in a hurry)
  • I have a monthly subscription with them (have had for a couple of years) and have never had any problems. I've found it very helpful and comprehensive in the genealogical info it contains. A friend was able to cancel easily after the trial period.

  • Fair enough, looks like I'm losing this one! I still stick by what I've said though, I've found better sites elsewhere for alot better money - which was made clear upfront, and cancelling was easy
  • Not very helpful to JoeBloggs, but...

Cumbria Library Service have signed a licence agreement whereby library members get free acess to the site via the libraries' website. They just need to put their membership no in.

Might be worth checking if your own library service has a similar agreement?

  • My first posting ,I have also been stung for £69.95 but have learnt a valuable lesson, could anyone advise me what I actually receive for this subscription i:e is it for a Year/Month/Other and more importantly how do I make sure they do not take any more payments.
  • it's well worth emailing them about this. I emailed and managed to get £69.95 refunded back to my card, albeit a couple of weeks later.
Please don't pm me asking to eat me because you are hungry.

I am NOT a sausage roll.
  • I signed up a few months ago for a 3 day free trial and not cancelled it or been charged

I signed up to their 14 day offer - found the site to be excellent and went for the full package.
It was all clearly explained on their web-site.

Apart from which, just about very "free" trial wants your credit card number first; you don't have to have a degree in nuclear physics to work out why !!!

Read what it says - then if you do cancel, make a note of when, how and why.
  • Ancestry are fine. If you have a problem just phone them up.........their American staff work UK time ! They are a friendly bunch and will actually e-mail you search help info and tips !

I've been on their Monthly £9.95 since February.............and I'm switching tomorrow to the £69.95 service to cover me for 2007.
