From the amount of money this company makes, Im sure it would not be too difficult for them to create an automated service to do so.
I have been able to sign up for a monthly subscription and then cancel it after a few days. As I had already paid for a month up front I was still able to access they content I paid for until the renewal date. I have done this on a couple of occasions and never been charged anything additional to what I signed up to. With both applying for and cancelling the subscription I was able to do this online.Sealed Pot Challenge 2011 #11480 -
I can't fault Ancestry. My only gripe is the cost. I wish it was still £69.99 a year."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

For the peeps who are claiming ignorance having never heard of them then all I can say is rubbish!
At some point you have signed up to this so I think you're biggest concern is why you don't even realise you are handing out your card info to all and sundry!0 -
What do you get for the money? It's a hell of a lot for a website subscription.0

BDM (birth death marriage) records dating back many many years. Pretty invaluable for genealogists.
It is an excellent resource if used properly and the T&Cs are read before signing up. It's definitely not a scam.0 -

As others have said, it provides a hell of a lot of information, including all of the censuses currently available. Being able to access those from the convenience of your own home is worth it alone. BMD records are available from the Free BMD index though. And the parish records are sparse. Basically it allows you to do research back to about 1837. Further back and you need parish records, which all too often means travelling a long way to a county records office.
It might be cheapest to subscribe for a month, get as much information as you can, then spend a few months processing it, and working out what you need next, then subscribing for another month. During the off times you order, wait for, and analyse birth, marriage and death certificates.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
And Genesreunited has loads of people on the messageboards who are willing to search Ancestry for you. I find Genes easier to use too. Just make sure you turn off the auto-renew in your account's membership section - I forgot about it and they took the money from my account (learnt my lesson there!)0

I've been a member of Ancestry UK for several years, like many
others, I took advantage of the free 14 day trial to start with.
Any trial offers have to be cancelled before the "free" period
ends, and a payment is taken, I recently had a free trial of
"Which" consumer magazine on the same basis.
Make a note of the date and remember to cancel!!
Don't blame Ancestry! :huh:0 -

It is very expensive but it's a good site and their customer service staff are great.
You can get an Ancestry subscription for "free" when you buy & install Family Tree Maker so it might be worth looking out for offers. A subscription code is built into the software.
The "World" version gets you a 6 months "Worldwide" subscription, the Platinum version gives a 6 month "Premium" sub.
Both versions are currently available via Tesco Clubcard points. Amazon or Currys sometimes do good deals too.0
