Hi I bought a dvd / vhs recorder from Ebay a couple of weeks ago and have tried recording dvds but can't get it to work. I have now read the manual and it recommends Verbatim dvd -rw 2x or Verbatim dvd -r 8x I can't seem to find any locally and wondered if anyone had any ideas.
TIA

Blank media that supports a faster write speed (e.g. 16x) will be superior to blank media that only supports a lower write speed (e.g. 2x)
It makes more sense to buy 16x DVD-R than 2x DVD-R since faster media is essentially a sign of better quality.
There's nothing to stop you burning at a slower speed. A rating of 16x only means that the DVD can support burning at a speed of up to 16x. It doesn't mean you have to burn at 16x. You could burn to that disc at a 1x speed if you were patient enough.
Decent DVD burning software allows you to drop the write speed from fast to slow, and that could improve the success rate of burning. The slower you burn, the less likely there will be burn errors.
If there's no difference in the price, always buy the fastest rating of blank DVD, and then burn at a slower speed if your drive cannot support anything faster.
As for buying Verbatim, there are probably loads of different types of DVD that are made by some unknown company but are branded "Verbatim". When it comes to hardware compatibility, it's all down to the "dye" used in the DVD. Decent burn software for the PC can identify that dye for you, and specialist retailers of blank DVD media will know which dye is used in each of their products. Once you've found a DVD dye type that works with your fussy hardware, it's probably best to stick with it.
EDIT: I would have recommended a blank media supplier but they have been bought out and apparently are dreadful to deal with now. For a quid or two they would supply you with a variety box of 10 or so DVDs, each disc of a different dye type. You could try them all out to find the ones that worked for you, before buying a large quantity. Is any other supplier doing that?0 -

My CD Recorder specifies discs with a speed of lower than 52X, even though it records at its set speed0 -
Hi thanks for the replies
Its a Sharp DV-RW360H and pretty old. I bought it from Ebay for £7.63 and collected it locally. It records VHS perfectly.
How would I know if there was a firmware update?
I have tried LOGIK -RW 2-4 speed
Tesco -r 16X
I have spent more on the dvds than I did on the recorder so I thought I would go straight to the recommended ones to see if it will work.
I got confused with the ones on Amazon as some of them were small and I didn't know how to tell the difference.
I really wanted some today as DS1 is a ball boy and flag waver at the European Cup final at Wembley today. I wanted to record the match to keep. If it is recorded on VHS I then have the problem of trying to get it transfered to DVD.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

DVD-R or DVD-RW will work on your DVD player.
Have you tried Wilkinsons if you have one nearby? They stock blank media, there's some on their website (although not as much choice) but a different brand which won't matter.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -

It'll be a shame if you have to do this. I assume you intend to record to VHS and then transfer to DVD later - you'll obviously lose quite a bit of quality.xxdeebeexx wrote: »Hi I bought a dvd / vhs recorder from Ebay a couple of weeks ago and have tried recording dvds but can't get it to work.
Can it play DVD's OK? I'm no expert but do the DVD's need to be specifically formated for use and if so, does it go through the process of formating it?Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -

Yep, plays dvds brilliantly. I have managed to record sound but no picture so I must have been able to format (I think)
