Car battery question - false economy?

I've had to buy four batteries this last year.
One for each of our two cars, one for the van, and a new one for the car I put back on the road last year (Which in the end I swapped onto my daughters car, just because I'm nice, and I'm using the one that came with it when we bought it, seems ok so far)
Winter killed all of them.
I usually recycle them as the leisure battery on the van, they last a year or two on there.0 -

Mine was 7 years old from new, my wife's came with the car nearly 4 years ago, and the van was on when we bought it 9 years ago.
So as the new car batteries were £40 to £50, and the van was £60 trade from Vauxhall, it never seems worth it.
It's being not used that kills them normally, so standing flat in a scrappy seems the worse way to treat them. That and they could be 5 years old when you buy them.
If they charge them up they may seem ok for a few months, come November you've had it again.0 -

You go in to reception, tell them what you want, then sit there and wait while the part is retrieved for you.
I have been driving since 2001 and for the first few years driving sheds used to spend at least a few hours a month taking bits and pieces of cars and used to love having a rummage around to see what else you could find. You could walk out with as much as you could carry and it would only cost a few quid. There was no issue about climbing up to the cars stacked 2 high and you could wonder the whole yard without any issues.
Now though at our local scrap yard you can only go into a section they have set out with cars that are all at ground level, no real issue but if the car you want happens to be out this area your out of luck. They make you wear a hi viz jacket and you must stay in the designated area, ok fair enough H&S, bit over the top but happy to comply. The biggest gripe I have is the price, I wanted a set of steel wheels for my car whilst I work on my alloys yet they wanted £100 for a set of steels with bald tyres on them, you can pick up half decent set alloys with legal tyres for that off ebay. If you want a piece of trim its going to cost you a tenner etc its nuts. You have to go and get the part off yourself and pay extra when compared with online where they remove the part or its a new part and they post it too you.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

I used to work where they labeled car batteries and we would have batteries in to be recharged and we would remove the old label and put a differnt brand label on.0
