Doesn't it give an address on the ebay transaction?
No but it does have their postcode and I have found one of their previous auctions which was the sale of a car (with the number plate visible)...Bingo!

Well take all that information to the police.

Also it would help others if you gave their ebay user name out.

I'd rather not give the ID until I've either heard back from them or the police have been informed.

Good action to take, as the seller like you may be innocent.
Here to learn and pass on my experiences.
Had a total of £8200 of debt written off due to harassment during 2010 and 2012.

They may be innocent (although unlikely). But in the eyes of the law they have still taken the OP's money for stolen property.

I very much doubt they were innocent. Reading through all the messages when I was enquiring about the warranty, they gave the impression they'd owned the laptop for months, whereas Dell said it was reported stolen less than a month before I bought it.

I too do not think they are innocent, but there is a small (extremely small lol) chance they are. That aside you do not want to go posting details on someone now being investigated by the police.

To stop others being scammed during the investigation, ebay should of suspended the sellers account.Do you know if they have?

They haven't yet, but I haven't phoned the number they gave me yet. I will phone them when I get home from work and will be sure to print off their preivious auctions first incase they get removed when ebay suspend their account.

I phoned the police earlier today and they said that I don't need to do anything at the moment and to wait for further contact from Dell, so that's a relief in one way. I did ask the officer if I would likely need to hand over the laptop and he said that in all likelihood, yes. However, something that's just crossed my mind; when I bought the laptop it had quite a small hard drive so I upgraded it to a much bigger one, and sold the smaller one. It's also got a leather protector on it that's designed to fit only this specific model and presumably once it's removed, it will be of no use. Where does that leave me?

Interesting question, not sure where you stand with the hard drive. My thinking would be maybe inform the new owner of the hard drive that it is from a stolen laptop. However they could then chase you for a refund, unless they try to get a refund direct from the culprit.
