  • can schelduled recordings be recorded while the box is in standby? or does the box need to be left on? because i read somewhere that you loose the epg data if you turn the box off.

You can put it on standy and it will record fine, powers itself up and then powers down again when recording is finished. Doesn't matter about the epg.

Though it is a pain that it can take 30 mins to re-get the epg next time you switch the box on! They are rumoured to be looking at saving the epg on the drive when you switch to standby, yippee!

Another bonus with this box (not sure if others do this), is that you can record 2 programs AND watch another at the same time, depending on whether or not it's being transmitted on the same MUX as one of the programs being recorded! This threw me at first but I read up on it.

there is an inbuilt menu function to switch it on and off automatically. It won't affect recordings, it just puts it in standby overnight. If EPG population is an issue set it to switch on 30 minutes before you wake up.

I think (but am not 100%) that you get the module and card when you sign up for topuptv with your £30 subscription. Maybe someone has allready done this?

Topuptv is semi-irrelevant now, you need their own PVR not a Humax. Not sure of any channels needing a card and module now

hmm, I am sorely tempted, but it seems rather steep...
Also, I am not sure if my current aerial on the roof is up to freeview, is there a simple test you can do? or is it a case of buying the box and if it don't work get a new aerial (eep)

Buty a cheap freeview box from Asda/Tesco, test your aerial then take it back.

Using PiP with on on BBC1 and one on Ch5 normally speeds it up somewhat

£170 is a lotttttt for this piece of kit. I think I must be getting tight or poor.

I got a £25 freeview player and a £20 PVR attached to my PC (600GB). Thats a hell of a price difference and I can do exactly the same as You lot do.

If it was £100, I'd think about it.
