  • Hi quoia
    Thanks for your points.

Read about the Humax HD PVR here:

    or
    http://www.humax-zone.tv/index.php?page=products
The specs are available in the catalogue at that link.

I am kind of assuming that you would be able to receive the standard Freeview transmission on the Hi-Duovisio until the HD transmission is available? Would this be the case?
I'm hoping this will make it somewhat 'futureproof' yes/no?

Agree with you about the size of the hard drive but this is bound get bigger the longer they leave hold off release. There is talk of an updated 9200T with a larger & faster hard drive will be released this year too.

I'm not trying to put anyone off buying one now, as you say the HD transmission probably won't be sorted til next year, I just wouldn't like to buy one tomorrow if there is either an updated or HD version arriving soon. Of course there is no official word of releases from Humax as yet.

You can upgrade the harddrive to 400Gb+ in the 9200 yourself if you wish. Check out the Humax forums.
Plus you can always transfer files to PC and then to DVD if you want to keep any particular programs.
  • I'm quite happy wit hte one i've just had - considering that a HD Freeview box with a huge Hard Disk would probably cost more thean twice the price, and there is no HD on freeview in the near future.

I have been waiting for a good "future proof", reasonably priced twin tuner pvr for years. Dont forget the Pace Sky+ box is 6+ years old. The Humax though attractive techy wise was far too expensive. The Japanese were not interested apart from Panasonic and even more expensive. Unfortunately the industry came to a virtual stop because of software problems, thus promised developments like an inbuilt dvd recorder got put on the back burner ;) , apart again from Panasonic. After purchasing 4 failures so far, digital change-over delays (3 years so far), HD now on the horizon. I have given up on my free to air search, ending up being fairly happy using a Thompson 40gig, reliable, user friendly device upstairs. Downstairs I now have an NTL TVDrive at no extra cost (at mo), which has 3 tuners, a true record 2 whilst watching a 3rd, HD ready,( BBC Preiview only at mo), optical sound output, upscaling for non HD services.

So if you have cable in your area, worth a look. I can now relax as I'm happy for a while at least, whilst terrestial TV sorts itself out.

After reading all the above comments, I decided that the new technology is likely to cost a great deal more, and there's no guarantee that the new Humax model will be any good anyway!

So I went down to Currys, armed with a printout from Dixons, showing their price at £179.82. The manager blankly refused to match the price (even though they're the same company) because Dixons is an online retailer. He said the best he could do was to match me half way, which I said wasn't good enough, so I walked out :)

Went into Comet... they're advertising, 'WE BEAT SALE PRICES', so I tried the same technique again. This time, the sales advisor took one glance at my printout and said, 'Oh no - we don't match Dixons. We'll only match our OWN online prices'. Again, I walked.

!!!!!! is wrong with these people?! Do they not want my money?

    Hi Cheddar
Didn't Comet offer you it for their online price of £180.95?
You could always buy from NextD at http://www.nextd.co.uk
They offer free next day delivery (order by 2pm), think its on there for £180 at the mo and they have a price match policy which means you might get a few more quid off.

Bummer... I thought their online price was £199.99!!! Mind you, the guy should have told me it was cheaper, don't you think? I'll print off a copy of the page from their website and take it down there tonight and pick one of these up :)

    Thanks for the advice! :D

P.S. When I pick this up, is it good to go? Or do I need to pick up any more cables or anything???

I thought that of Currys and Comet. They were just not interested in the sale.

Empire direct is £179.98 delivered. It is now saying in stock aswell. Nextday do sound a good deal if they can deliver it that fast though ;)

I agree with dc about the price. If the Humax was about £120 they would fly off the shelfs. Also if the goverment/ broadcasting associations started bringing better digital transmissions in it would also help. I have three years to wait before I can get the full package.

That is REALLY slack that they tell you they will match their own online price then not bother to check it!
I would speak to the manager and complain about that level of service, tell him that you have had to waste time & money visiting the store twice because their staff can't provide a decent level of service. Maybe he/she'll chuck in some free leads.
I'm not sure what comes in the box but you will need an RF Aerial Cable & Scart lead.

I thought about doing that. But do you think they care?? I doubt it as most of them are college kids on min wage.

Mine came with a scart cable. But it was an extremelly cheap version with poor wiring. I had to remove one of the pins at the tv end, to stop cross interferance with the analogue signal. You really need a screened scart cable. These cost about £15 to £50 depending where you buy and cable quality. The one that comes with it will surfice for most people but may need the mod. It depends how much of an audio geek you are to whether you upgrade ;)
You will also need two aerial cables. One from the aerial connection to the Humax and one from the Humax to the tv. I found my installation was better with this loop in.
