The double standards at work.

Further musings ... you're in an extremely privileged position being able to go to University. Neither of my parents had that chance, nor does most of the world's population who don't get basic schooling or even clean water in some cases. Your constant complaining about how hard done by you are rankles with those of us who take a broader view and realise how easy we have it in Western culture. A little more perspective and a lot less self-absorption please, young man.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0

studentphil wrote:Just to comfirm, it is a double standard as they go on endlessly about students writing in legible way, but yet they don't.
It is a flaw in that it reduces the feedback process.
You can only confirm something that is accepted fact.
I disagree that it is double standards or a flaw, so the best you can do is ASSERT those ideas, rather than CONFIRM them.
In fact, it is going to enhance the feedback process as you will now speak to them and they will respond, and there will be more feedback than there would have been had the writing been legible.

studentphil wrote:Many have bad handwriting and that is a problem, so I am going to put forward a suggestion that they all move to electronic marking.
marking and writing feedback takes a long time - and unfortunately, a disproportionate amount of time gets spent putting comments on the really weak essays and the average/above average essays suffer.
doing it all on computer just creates huge difficulties in terms of getting electronic copies to people - multiple versions need to be saved which wastes disc space. it is also far far faster to write some comments rather than doing it on a screen.
whenever i want to read a paper, i print it out - if i had to mark 75 essays in under a week whilst attached to a computer, i would hate it. and if my handwriting is bad, someone can contact me and ask for further clarification.... it's actually a pretty good system if you get lots of feedback - in a masters course i did, the feedback consisted of 1 sentence on a cover sheet with no specific recommendations - and that took 4 months to get back..... you're really not in a bad position, you just seem to have a 'glass half empty attitude' to it.
in terms of 'dealing' with the problem, i'm assuming you've already tried getting someone else to read the comments to see if they can do any better? or getting another student to read it and give suggestions?
you've had some really good results when you've got up and done sometime - trying to solve a problem will always be far more positively responded to than comments that imply a victim mentality.... which is what gets people's backs up.:happyhear0 -

I have asked 3 people to read it,but no one can make any sense of it.
I should maybe just email her and ask her if she can remember my essay (which she might not do as the group was big) and just ask her to write a bit neater on the next one if she can.:beer:0 -

Absolutely ridiculous.
I get essays sent to me at noon when they have a class at 2pm, they expect me to read the whole thing AND write legibly?
I appreciate the need for feedback but I would hate to sit in front of my computer marking 150 lab scripts.
If you have a keen student, which you sometimes pretend to be, then just go and speak to the tutor, I've never had a student ask me much because I know they don't even read the feedback.
Otherwise, just live with it.0 -
Mountain out of a mole hill.
Just enjoy your holidays, then when you return go and meet with her. This delay in feedback won't affect your future work as you're on Christmas break.0
