@pigpen, your daughter is a lovely looking young lady!:).

they are both my daughters :D I have 6 of the money spending critters.. thank you though.. the younger one in the top pic thinks she is ugly :(.

They are both blind as bats (4-5+) and the older one has really bad astigmatisms in both eyes and has blepharitis so has really dry crispy eyes so contacts are a nightmare, but she has those too!!!

They both have 6 month eye checks, thankfully DS2 has annual ones and not a huge prescription.. none of them could manage 3 months without specs though.

Thank goodness other people think that NHS glasses are quite trendy. My daughter (12) picked the free ones even though I said she could have any (wanted her to be happy wearing them). I just asked her if she still likes them and she said they are really nice - and this is at an age when they get very fussy with their appearance. Well done NHS.

You mean that wasn't you in the pic?:D Seriously though, they ARE gorgeous girls. They shouldn't think they're ugly because they are far from it.

Most kids get screened at nursery and any problems are usually picked up on then. If you see anything before then take the child to your GP who can advise on who is best to see (some areas send you to the normal optician and some to the hospital).

If you think your child has a "turn" take them to the GP asap as too many parents leave them too long and once the child hits 8 year old there's not much that we can do.

If nursery doesn't catch anything then just take them every year once they reach school age to make sure that no problems crop up. Poor vision can cause many problems at school and they can be masked as learning difficulties.
  • having worn glasses for 18 years they have all been from Specsavers - they were free for the first 10 years and I LOVED picking them out each time. It wasn't until I became an adult that I paid for my glasses. Admittedly, looking bad I had some awful frames but I picked these and thought I was the bizz at the time *I was eight, they were multicoloured..* I loved my NHS glasses and knowing that I could get a new pair the next time (if my prescription changed) or after 2 years meant I could go for the slightly crazier designs without my parents intervening.

OP - tell them to go whistle. It was their choice to pay.

DON79 - I had my first eye test at 8 when my parents noticed I had to stand right in front of the tv to read teletext. They both wore glasses and recognised the signs, however my school never picked up on it as I was short sighted.

I took mine between 3 and 5 the first time.. they do the test with pictures rather than letters if they don't know the alphabet. Mine got their first specs 6-7. I think the baby might need them sooner as her dad and grandad and aunt are all moles!!!

  • I'll save you the time :p

Here's a picture of me in my NHS childrens' glasses. I do have a low prescription though. I got them when i was just under 19 and in full time education so they were free.

They're wonky but that's my fault. I only just noticed and I cba to take another :D

NHS glasses have dramatically improved since I had them. I wish they had looked like yours when I was at school :)
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
