Even if his own policy covers him to drive other vehicles the other vehicle needs its own insurance.
Wouldn't that only apply to vehicles being kept on public road and not private land (i.e, his dad's driveway?) Also, some polices do state that you can drive any car you like dispite it not having insurance. It's all down to the policy.0 -

Don't forget...once the car is parked whilst the driver goes to the shops...the car is not covered by that driver's insurance clause..[only effective whilst driving???]....therefore, if there isn't an existing policy on the car, it will be on the public highway without insurance.
The object of this change in regulation is to make is simpler and easier for the Police to target those who are totally unrecorded as vehicles and drivers....
No longer will Police time be spent/wasted chasing vehicles whose driver has personal cover...even though the vehicle has none....
Now, the Post Office can deal with those vehicles not SORNed [or taxed] which have no cover.......
simplifies the whole system, and simplifies enforcement.
Whether it's a good move or a retrograde move will depend on personal circumstances....?
Some may say that mandatory insurance regardless is a restriction of freedom to chose.......?
[whether to SORN...often for a long period rather than a short one...]...or whether not to bother but keep taxed, but parked up on private land.....?
I also suspect that Insurance companies will have to tighten up their responsibilities regarding cancellation of policies...yet retaining basic cover [3rd party liabilities]?
Customers are not going to be happy if their insurer cancels for some reason, and there is a mix-up in notification...as often happens....and the first the customer knows is a letter through the door with a charge of 'no insurance'???
Especially in cases of administrative mix-up, when an insurer inadvertently cancels? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
I got a letter with my RoadTax renewal that said it was in force from the beginning of April!
Though I wouldn't be surprised if they have changed the date since my renewal letter was sent out, wouldn't be the first time.
This Continuous Insurance rubbish will only affect law abiding road users, not the criminal drivers it is meant to sort out.
It also means that more people will have to have two Insurance policies whilst they sell a car or SORN it, who really wants to buy a car that is SORNed, you have all the hassle of getting it home, even if you are insured, you have no RoadTax.
I wonder if this is actually intended to make more people sell there car to a dealer?
What a strange idea!
Car dealers buying loads of cars they can't sell because of the new regulations?
There's another point, are dealers going to have to check your insurance before they let you drive a car off their forecourt?0 -

NO! It applies to cars on private land also, if they can be used on public roads. Either insured or SORN'ed
I THINK there may be exemption for certain cars. (Self build kit cars with no ID yet.) Vehicles that don't use public roads. (Farmers vehicles) but you'll have to read up to confirm the exemptions.
As I don't expect to need to know these exemptions, I'm not interested in reading up about them.0 -

Thanks,
not a very good letter, but to be expected from the DVLA.
Next question really is how long do you have to get it sorted before they send out the fine? No mention of what happens next in there.
If they let you take out insurance, do you have a week, two weeks, a month?
Askmid needs to be updated, if the insurer is slow, that have to give grace for that.
If you sorn it, that can take a week or two, so again how long?
And the best one of all, if you have insurance, and for some reason it's not on askmid, you are liable for the insurer's mistake if it doesn't go on in time!!!0 -
If you get stopped the police may contact your insurance to prove you are covered can you see the DVLA doing that?
