Do I need Insurance to get road tax?

Just wondering if anyone can help please.

Im looking to sell my car so have left it taxed on my dad's driveway.

The tax runs out at the end of the month but my dad wants to use the car for a few weeks qas he is having problems with his own car, he is covered 3rd party on his own insurance.

Can i re-new the tax disc without having insurance of my own?

Thanks

No. Get temporary insurance to cover the first day of June. Check very carefully whether his insurance covers him WITHOUT the car having its own policy.

Sorry but the above is wrong, the car needs its own insurance even if its kept off the road, if there is no insurance on the car you must sorn it and return the tax to the DVLA.
Even if his own policy covers him to drive other vehicles the other vehicle needs its own insurance.

This is not yet in force, and will not affect the OP's position.

The Govt has stated that this new law will not be enforced until 20th June - and even then "offenders" will get a letter about this, giving them the chance to put matters in order before legal enforcement will be taken.

the new law came into force on monday but the government is giving an amnesty until late june, this will still stop the op getting insurance for 1 day to tax the car as the insurance companies will be enforcing the law now as its in their financial interest.
Also if the op cancels the policy after taxing the car then they must return the tax and sorn the vehicle.

It's not the insurance companies who will ever enforce the law! Though they will of course profit from it.

The OP will be able to take out a policy for 1/6/11 for one day if he so wishes! The insurers will happily take his money!

I thought you had to have at least X days insurance to get tax anyway? (as in some PO staff will refuse to issue a disc if you don't)

    No.

You need to have insurance that is in force on the day the tax comes into force.

I got a letter with my RoadTax renewal that said it was in force from the beginning of April!

Though I wouldn't be surprised if they have changed the date since my renewal letter was sent out, wouldn't be the first time.

This Continuous Insurance rubbish will only affect law abiding road users, not the criminal drivers it is meant to sort out.

It also means that more people will have to have two Insurance policies whilst they sell a car or SORN it, who really wants to buy a car that is SORNed, you have all the hassle of getting it home, even if you are insured, you have no RoadTax.

I wonder if this is actually intended to make more people sell there car to a dealer?

How do we now what is in the letter?
It not been said anywhere you can buy insurance or declare sorn when they contact with the first letter.

It could equally as well say
"You were not on the askmid database on xx xx xx, please send us a copy of your insurance for that period or pay us the fine"

    Yes it has.

They have given this "letter" a special name!

It is to be known as an IAL (Insurance Advisory Letter), and will set out that you risk getting done for it if you don't take out insurance.

If you don't act on the IAL, then a £100 FPN follows, along with more grave threats (clamping/seizing/crushing).
