Hi Cheery, I would like to play flute again (after 20 years  of not playing). Which flute would you recommend to be good value for a beginner who just wants to play for her own pleasure.

  • *waves* sounds like you've been busy! Am very impressed indeed with the cheery clarinet playing :D

    Morning!

Marru, I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea, I know as much as you do, and Squizz probably knows more :p Mine is the one I bought 17 years ago with my saturday job money - a silver plated Yamaha 2II that I paid £400 at the time (I worked a long time at that job to pay for that!). It's a basic student one, apparently, but I did Grade 7 on it, and only had it serviced once (er, about 2 months ago :rotfl:). Is it generally better in these situations to get a slightly better quality second hand one for the same price as a new one? I have no idea! You'll be fine with a student one though I reckon.

Squizz! How lovely to see you back :D Hope you had a FAB time. Clarinet playing is filling me with cheeriness (and depriving me of lots of puff! :rotfl:) I'm busy learning to stick my fingers in a different place - see a C in the music, put fingers in what I think should be an G... :rotfl: Haven't even entertained the idea of transposing from flute music yet - that'd mean seeing a C and playing a B flat, which means putting fingers where I think it should be an F sharp, right?? :rotfl: Gosh, I'll stop, I'm confusing myself now and I've probably got that last bit the wrong way round :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Grumpiity hormonal grumpiness here this morning - probably because I was up til 2.30 listening to Mr Daffs putting the world to rights. Was sat having breakfast in the sunshine in the living room this morning, and he came in and tried to close the curtains, and I'm afraid I've been grumpy ever since... :o Bah.

On the plus side, it's that kind of stompy grumpiness that gets things done, so I've swept the kitchen floor, cleaned all the downstairs windows inside and out, and sewn myself a new face cloth from an old flannel :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Nice lot of activity - but I could do with a bit less of the grumpiness please :rotfl: :rotfl:

Anyway, working at home today, had a good productive day yesterday so I'd best crack on! Hope you're all good xx
  • Oh gosh I haven't even thought about tranposing from flute music yet.. could just play what you see, if you're not playing with any other instruments it doesn't matter if you're a tone out :rotfl: Really good to learn how to do it though :)

    Hugs for the grumpiness x

Marru - I would go for a Yamaha (the 211 is the usual recommended first flute), Trevor James, or Jupiter - any of their basic models are decent and reliable. Definitely worth looking on eBay for a second hand one. Or this - http://www.justflutes.com/just-flutes-jfl201e-flute-product58377.html - is pretty good for the price. I'd avoid anything really really cheap (especially if it's a Chinese make) as they are just not well made enough to make it worthwhile. How exciting, more tootling :D

    Blimey I'm struggling today :o

I've drunk tea, been for a walk in the sunshine, bought a couple of mini reduced house plants, had a nice lunch, started to sew (and now discarded) a skirt, and done some work, and I'm *still* grumpy :(

Doesn't help that the work I'm doing this week is very sit-by-myself-on-computer type work, rather than talking to people or working with anyone else.

Feel like I *need* something, but have no idea what it is :o A few weeks off? A non full time job?? A cleaner?

(mostly likely a few less hormones and a thyroid operation would sort me out! :p)

    Bleurgh.

This afternoon's going to be a slow one. but this work has GOT to be done - I just have no idea how I'm going to do it today :o (I mean I know *how* to do it, it's just putting one foot in front of the other that's difficult right now :o)

    bleurgh indeed.

    Thanks Squizz :D

Just potted my new cheery houseplants into bigger pots and stuck one in the living room and one up by my desk in the attic - very jolly :)

Might start talking to it soon :p
