Htc desire hd - batter life issue

Only had this phone 4 weeks and I am having major problems with battery life. Fully charged is not lasting me the day. Fully charged this morning made 1 x 4 minute phone call left the phone on, unused for 1 hour and the battery was down to 50%. Has anyone else had this problem. I have closed down the majority of the apps that I had on there and dont have wifi on or blue tooth unless I am using handsfree. Any suggestions??????

htc phones gobble battery life - at least my wildfire would.
You could try downloading a free app called Auto Taskkiller I think it was from android market.
It lets you select automatic services to turn off - things that you may not be using all the time, like gmail for example.
That reduces some of the memory load and possibly the battery load.

I heard there was a firmware update at the end of last week that give 'up to 25% better battery life'. Now, I've no idea if this works (I don't have a D HD), also if you have a branded firmware I doubt it's there for you (yet).
But if it's a vanilla phone from HTC I'd take a look (or even root and flash with a customer rom if not).

Eh? Could you say that again for a non-technical idiot please? Wht's "branded firmware" and "root and flash"?

I downloaded Juice Defender for my Desire HD, turned the screen light down a bit and made the timeout shorter.

Sorry. Branded firmware is when the network adds their own 'bit and bobs' to the phone. Like Orange adding their own maps, home pages and the like.

If the phones not network branded you can check for new firmware by hitting menu > settings > about phone > system update.

But do it while connected via wifi or (if there's an update) it'll use a large part of your data allowance up.

Rooting give you root access to the phone, meaning you can mess with everything on the phone.
Flashing, is installing customer firmware. There a whole army of developers out there writing or changing HTC's version of Android. You have to have a rooted phone before you can use this, but it gives you all the new features without waiting for your network to issue an update (and some networks never do).

The task-killer debate could go on for hours, it's a matter of personal taste.

How did you get your phone? Did you get it from your network, or buy it somewhere else?

If you brought it from Vodafone OR "somewhere else" (and it has no branding, like a Orange Logo when it starts up) then go to...
Settings> About phone > Check for updates

If your phone is branded, then you'll have to wait for your network to release the update. My father's DHD seems much better battery-wise after the update.

Yep, it is correct, we are now back to the 1990's in regards to battery life on mobile phones. Android smartphones are nowadays barely able to last a full day with Apple being marginally better. You need to close ALL apps to get a day out of them.

OK, so as my phone came from o2, I have to wait for them to give me the update? How does it happen? Do they send me a text or something?

Although, I don't see the o2 screen when the phone boots up. When I had a 3 mobile Wildfire, it had a 3 mobile flash screen during the boot process.

My phones actually came via Dial A Phone, does that mean it might not be branded and I can check for an update as above?

Will I do anything bad to the phone if I check for an update and it is branded to o2? Or will the option just not be there?

You would be better off downloading HTC Sync and installing it on your pc - then connect phone to pc and htc sync will do any update when and if it is available. This will also be quicker and more reliable method with faster pc connection than a mobile internet connection.

Am I safe to do that if I'm not sure if my phone is branded? How do I find out definitively if my phone is branded to o2?
