I'm confused by the assumption that people are unable to understand the technology - did it occur to you that they might just not care? Presumably the majority of people asking you these questions have jobs of their own, for which they know about the things that are relevant to their work - why would they want to learn about the intricacies of television technology just to make one purchase? I think you overestimate the usefulness of the knowledge you have outside your realm of work. Why would anyone devote their time to learning the information you need to do your job so that you don't have to?0

I actually understand vyles point, my last employer had a contract for grading(they were returns) some real crappy freeview boxes, some of the reasons for return the item were just daft when the item worked and nothing wrong with it when i tested the dam thing. Described faults like remote doesnt work, unit doesnt turn on, if people read the instructions then they would have read that batteries(working ones) need to be in the remote.
On the 3d aspect, its just a gimmick and nothing more, its an over priced gimmick for cinemas and for the home as well.0 -

I don't expect people to know everything, but either do their research, OR listen to the explanation when they ask a question.
I'm sure they'd be peeved if I went into their place of work needing information and then ignored their answer or said, "No, actually, I don't care about that," and then complained when I bought something that didn't do what I wanted it to because of the thing I didn't care about.0 -
It can be annoying, but I guess you have to remember that you work 5 days + a week with all this technology; it's second nature. Some customers may never have seen these before, and may only even look at these items when theirs has broken and needs replacing. The boring workplace to us is a treasure trove of exciting and futuristic things to other people.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

As someone who sells TVs, it is very frustrating when I'm serving somebody and see people shamble up to the 3D TVs, put the glasses on, and go "Oh, it doesn't work."
How hard is it to use your eyes and notice that the glasses are "Active" not passive - it says so on the signs.
The price of the glasses also shows that they obviously do something.
How about the battery compartment and the "ON" button? No? Is that too obvious?
It's mind boggling. The first time I ever saw active glasses before I knew exactly how they worked, I looked at them, felt the weight and knew they must have some technology in them. I found the power switch, put them on my face and pressed the button.
Bingo! The image became 3D.
Not so for the geniuses who parade through my shop. Even when I tell them there's power switch, they can't find it (usually because they're holding them by said switch), or when they do find it, they press the button before putting the glasses on, then press it again to switch them off, THEN put the glasses on.
Never mind the twits who go up to a TV showing a 2D image and wonder why it doesn't look 3D. I mean, come on, if there is only one sharp image on the screen, of COURSE it's not 3D, and no, you don't have to watch a 3D tv in 3D all the time. What would be the point of that?
And don't take Sony glasses or Samsung glasses to a panasonic TV, of course they won't work. Do you really think they would charge so much for a pair of glasses if you could use any old 3D glasses with them?
And while I'm ranting, is it not obvious when something is called a "DVD recorder," it will also PLAY DVDs? Did your VIDEO RECORDER not play videos? Of course, if something records, it stands to reason that it plays... how do you think it plays back the recordings you've made?
A blue ray PLAYER on the other hand will not RECORD because the word recorder is not present in its name. And yes, it will play CDs and DVDs, just like it says on the bloody specification card!
Freeview IS digital. All TVs have freeview tuners have and have had for over a year, why on earth would I sell a TV that's useless in most of the country?
If youre going to moan about black borders on your picture in one breath, why ask me for a square TV in the next? You're going to get borders again!
HD ready does NOT mean the tv has an hd tuner, nor does Full HD. If the tv has an HD tuner it will say so. If you're that worried about resolutions, LOOK at the resolution of the screen in the specification.
And don't ring me up if the 100hz tv you bought is displaying a message in the top left when you change the channel stating the resolution of the feed and "50hz" because you don't understand broadcast technology, and even if I do explain to you why that is, you still won't understand.
Phew that felt good.....only an hour until I go to work *sob*.
Vyle, can I suggest you are in the wrong job mate. I am by no means tech. challenged...I can pull PC's to bits and diagnose and repair many problems. I do need help and guidance with TV's though LCD. LED, Plasma etc...not my forte...I need help there!
Vyle put your money where job is...tell us your name and who you work for...thought not.0 -

Not to comet staff, 5 days a week and still thick as !!!!!!Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)
new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,0000 -
And when I do need help, I go find someone, the nearest staff member will do, but this typically ends up with them saying "I don't know anything about that, I'll go get someone who does". This someone is usually either "on lunch" or dealing with another customer. So they call over someone else, who is equally clueless and between the two of them, answer any questions by reading from the POS. Don't you think I've already read this? And that's why I'm asking for more help? I wont go into more detail about me buying a new printer recently, but lets just say "idiotic" was a vert good adjective to use...
I can see your point in a way. But if it's a store that sells lots of different items it's a bit unfair to expect people who earn little money an hour to know anything about everything.
Kinda reminds me of this time when a Lady came in and asked me what I knew about washing machines. Asking a 19 year old who earns just over £6 an hour ain't gonna get you far.I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

No, you misunderstood. I'm talking about EVERY 3 minutes. By different people. I was in Comet on Thursday and I was asked by at least 6 staff members if I needed help...
I had that when I wanted to use the vouchers from my insurance. Nipper straight out of school, he got:
'I have insurance vouchers and I want a cooker that actually works because that last one was !!!!!!'
Boy did he run off fast to find someone 'more senior' :rotfl:Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

And me :hello:
Since my eyes don't work together (and never have, I even had surgery as a child for it but to no avail) I am unable to use ANY 3D glasses. The images just flick between red and green where my eyes can't adjust to it and it gives me a headache
Am I going to be able to watch TV at all 5 years from now?!
Me too. Identical problem. 3-D is useless.0 -
