Why people are giving up selling on Ebay.

Seller sells an item for 99p with free postage, sends item not tracked and it doesn't arrive. Buyer contacts seller 2 weeks later (very reasonable) to ask where it is. Seller refunds buyer that day because its obviously lost in post and files a transaction cancellation request to get fees back - fair enough?

Well not according to these three people whose responses were:

Don't agree to the cancellation, as if you do you can't leave FB & the seller gets his fees back.
Why? What are you going to put - "item lost in post, refunded immediately I made seller aware it had not arrived" or would you lie and stick the boot in???

Someone who thinks that the seller should be psychic and, without any tracking or contact from the buyer, just know that its not arrived:

If he hasn't got the manners to email you and tell you they're lost, decline, and mark down the comms and dispatch.

And the best one from this very boards admin who also seems to think the seller should be psychic and just "know" it was lost in the post:

PEOPLE WITH THIS ATTITUDE SHOULD BE DISGUSTED WITH THEMSELVES. They are the reason Ebay is being abandoned by the little person, the very people they look to to provide good bargains, ultimately ending up being filled exclusively with cheap tat from Hong Kong or overpriced stuff from UK retailers.

I really hope that they sell on Ebay, it happens to them and they get 1 star ratings and negged to hell. Then when they come straight on here asking how to get it reversed - hypocrites - I can do my best Nelson "HA-HA".

Hammyman has a very good point. I was also shocked at the responses given on that thread, because I could not see that the seller had done anything wrong at all. I assumed that the responses were, as often seems to be the case, from people who had not actually read the OP carefully, but were knee-jerking to a few key words.

Your anti buyer rants are always entertaining. Still confused as to why you use ebay if you hate buyers so much.

People have been telling me sellers are leaving ebay for the 11 years I have been selling I have still to see any evidence.

So let me tell you why I would never agree to a mutual from a lost item

Actually no. If the seller is a private seller they can claim back via royal mail for the whole cost of the item. So if the buyer agrees to the cancellation they get their FVFs back as well as the selling price so in reality get their FVFs back twice and have made a profit from a loss. Is that really fair?

If the seller is a business they will get their buying price back from RM (though RM do normally refund me the sale price on my business sales). Any business with a modicum of of common sense works losses into their profit margins. So the few losses should be covered in the business plan. Any business that doesn't do that really wont survive long.

So for the few loses I get I would never ask a buyer for a cancellation as it makes me look dodgy as a seller and the costs are covered in my business plan. If a seller asks me I would and have refused.

So I suggest you pick your toys off the floor and have a think and use a bit of common sense. If not just give up ebay as it sounds like it's going to give you a heart attack

It might have been useful if you had actually read the thread before you started ranting.

Seller made no contact, no apology did not bother corresponding to the buyer at all, so why agree to a mutual to a seller who obviously can't be bothered to even send the buyer an email?

I would not usually refuse a mutual for a lost item, but unlike you I read the OP on that thread and my comments were based on the info contained in it.

What difference does it make? You know its lost, they know its lost so just refund and move on. What is a message going to do - magically make the item re-appear?

Do you work in the public sector soolin?

Hands up anyone who has successfully got re-imbursement from the Royal Mail for items lost in the post.

The aggravation of going through a claim makes it completely pointless for a 99p item.

And if they get their 99p from the RM and FVF they've made a whacking 20p odd extra profit selling on Ebay. WOW - I'll book my holiday to the Caribbean now.....but wait - if they sell the same item for 99p in a shop etc, they've made nothing extra.

And how do you work out they get their FVF back twice? The one from the sale is removed from the invoice - zero money goes to the seller. Where does the second one come from? Certainly not Ebay.
