My Big Plan to lose some weight with Type 2 Diabetes

Hi, I have been shoved into reality in a rather unpleasant way about my weight size after finding out I have now got diabetes.
I've created a new profile as although I do have another profile I received a few nasty comments on my other profile from so called friends on subjects related I thought it might be best. I'm sure I'll get more but at least its not from people I class as friends!

Just as a background I've never been skinny, about size 14, no idea what weight, and have always been relatively fit and healthy.
But after working in a very manual enviroment 4 years ago I now work in an office and basically sit on my bum all day with no exercise to compensate.

The reality now is that I am a size 18 - 20, constantly have sores on my legs and thighs from chaffing, tired all the time and although do walk home from work most days I am really unfit and unhealthy.
I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes which has really hit me hard and I am now desperate to lose the weight as I look dreadful even to a point where my 10yr relationship is suffering.

I guess I am hoping for support but more in a way of asking what can I do, what has worked for others and where is the best place to kick myself up the backside without demoralising myself if that makes sense.

Thanks for reading, all tips and suggestions welcome even if they sound mean. After all it was me that put myself in this position and I am ashamed of myself and just want to get myself healthy again.

Well done for being brave & admitting you need to take action.

Have you thought about joining Weightwatchers or Slimming World.
They have good diet plans & being weighed each week helps to keep you focussed.

alos don't be disheartened if you make slow progress. It took a while for the weight to go on & it will take a while for it to come off.

    Hi

I have type 2, last 2 weeks of Jan, first 2 weeks of Feb I was really ill, while the Dr's and nurse prodded and poked about, took various body fluids etc.

I was told in no uncertain terms to loose 5 stone!, as of Monday 16th May I had lost exactly 3 stone, :j:T2 more to go!!.

Listen to what your Dr and nurse tell you and act on their advise, does your Dr's have a dedicated diabetes nurse? if so, book an appointment with her/ him and have a long chat. Honest it will help. My nurse scared the life out of me, over what COULD happen, and that was / is enough for me to do something about my weight etc.

My blood test in Jan were dire, the ones they did in April, everything was back to normal, but my blood pressure was still up, mainly because the nurse had 2 goes to find any blood, so tomorrow fingers cross, when my blood pressure is taken and it is down, I can come off my tablets, but I still have these 2 stone to loose.

I was also sent for a specilist eye scan etc, so if they offer you extra type test take them.

I keep a food diary and I write everything I eat and drink down! much to the amuse ment of my OH, but it helps me keep track of what I am eating.

I'll watch this thread with interest.

    Good luck.

Hiya, thanks for replying. Most of the comments were on my fb account after I stupidly revealed my fb details after putting an image on here. Some so called friends then found it funny on a reply to a thread I created which I didn't realsie friends followed my postings on here to that extent!

I do have a gym membership but stopped using it last year when I had two eye operations. I was told by the doctor that I could go back in november but by then the sores on my legs were so painful I found it hard to move fast.
The sores are appauling, open blisters all down my thighs and have gotton worse recently. My wonderful long suffering bf had had enough of what I was putting myself through and made me go to the doctors where I now have steriod cream to treat it with antibiotics and they believe the pain of it should at least reduce so i can get back to the gym. Any sweating or rubbing is agony. I really have no idea why I have put myself through this. It was at this doctors appointment afterblood tests that they have diagnosed me with diabetes. My mum is shocked and grilled me last night over the phone although it was with good intentions but I just wanted to cry like a naughty child!

My eating habits are not horrendous, well at least I don't think they are but then again I haven't got much right on my health for so long now.
I never have breakfast, usually have soup for lunch with occasional baked crisps. Have loads of tea to drink all day then have an evening meal of something like lasagne, or chilli and rice. I rarely have fried food or chips as we do not have a freezer or microwave so most nights food is freshly cooked. I rarely have junk food as most gives me stomach upset so I avoid it.
I rarely eat sweets although once a week at the cinema do have a tub of icecream.
I guess I'm just going to have to keep a strict log and see where the mistakes are.
  • I found that by stopping bread, the pounds fell off. I still eat carbs,(potatoes, brown rice) but try to eat them for my main meal only and i eat that at lunchtime when possible rather than in the evening.
I replaced bread with oatcakes. I also eat a lot of fish.
That doesn't mean it'll work for you of course, but it is worth a try. When you've lost a few pounds it gives you the incentive to carry on. Sounds like you're doing well with the walking to work too, so try to step up the pace maybe? Good luck! :T

I know, my mum said that as well last night.
I get up at 7am, rush about getting ready and then dash out to work.
We have a pay per item fruit bowl at work so I am going to start using that. plus buy some cereal so I can eat breakfast oin the staff room.

Apart from the sores on your legs, is there any other reason for not going to the gym?

Well done for your OH making you go to the Dr's and getting looked at again, make sure you use the cream etc to help you, and go back if your legs don't improve.

Ask at the gym for a programme of exercise to help you, explain to them about your current health problems / legs etc they are there to help you.

No its just the sores that made it painful. I go through the mood of having every intention of going, then I get home and then just can't face the agony. I now know its tough and that I have to do something.

when I joined the gym I created a program to follow and its one I can still do.
I went to a few evening classes with some friends but was the biggest girl there and with feeling so low it just put me off. I think if I wasn't feeling so bad about myself I would have been fine, even if I was the biggest person there!

My bf goes as he needs to lose weight and is doing amazing. I worry about putting him off going with my previous lack of motvation

That's just horrible! :( A real friend would be worried about your health (and discuss this with you, if you were open to such discussion) but wouldn't comment on your size/shape. I hope you are over the shock of your diagnosis. I remember a classmate at school who had diabetes. The blood tests and injections and biscuit nibbles, to check things in check, seemed to be endless but she managed very well (she did everything herself from an early age) and it didn't affect her weight at all. I'm sure you will manage just as well, given a little time to adjust.

I think this is the way to go. :) It's not *what* you eat but how *much* you eat, that affects your actual weight. (Of course, it is possible to be thin and unhealthy but I think a balanced diet is a separate issue here.) I'd definitely write everything down, no matter how trivial, for at least a week and then work out how much you're actually eating. It may be as simple as discovering you are snacking more frequently than you thought or having seconds and thirds at dinner. Or you may find that you can significantly reduce your calorie intake by switching to different versions of your current foodstuffs. Or maybe it's just portion size and you're dishing up the same amount for yourself as your hubby. I don't know.

I am also with your mom re eating breakfast. If you are very rushed and don't have time to eat a "proper" breakfast, then I think there is nothing wrong with a banana or a cereal bar. Highly portable (with their own packaging), nice portion size and quick to eat.

If you sit in front of a computer all day, then I think that can sometimes make you feel hungry - as if you've done a lot of "work" (in terms of physical activity) when you haven't really moved at all. Now, I'm not advocating you start smoking (if you don't) but maybe you should start taking some "air" breaks? Get up every hour or so, stretch your legs, sip a glass of water, splash your face and come back refreshed. Just an idea.

    Good luck with everything. :)
