Seeing your GP to start tablets - before you do any of this you need to have a one-to-one consultation with a diabetes nurse specialist. Sit down and talk it through, not 5 minutes in and out with your GP.
Hi margaret
My doctor pretty much said this was likely I had diabetes and he sent me for blood tests. I could have waited but I wanted to know so I phoned and the doctor called me back to confirm what he suspected.
My first appointment with the doctor and the nurse / dietician is on friday so I will get my prescription although I'm sure he said it was tablets not injections so I have my fingers crossed. I don't know how long the appointment is for but its a two part thing so I guess they have something sorted for me. They are very good there and when I had my eye operations they were amazing.
I have no idea what type it is although I'm sure he said on the phone. I was trying to concentrate but I guess the shock of it just smacked me in the face a bit!
I am really greatful for the sugggestions and also contact from people who are going through or have gone through the same thing, now I have to prove to myself that I can do this and believe me I have every intention of doing so.0 -
MrsWoolfe - I'm really pleased to hear you are doing so well. I just wanted to say your post really made me think about how to deal with this.
Breakfast is a problem for me. I am not great in the mornings and have a weak stomach anyway so any food usuallyy makes me gag. However I have to address this so today I started with a pear when I got to work. A very handy pay as you go fruit bowl will help me until I guess my body gets used to having breakfast!
LilythePink - I have replied to your message. Its not easy but from reading on here there are a lot of encouraging messages and I guess its a matter of taking one step at a time. Also like me you have just found out. I guess we can't expect miracles straight away unfortunately. Don't give up, I'd love to know how you are coping and I will keep you updated on me.
I will have a look at WW but will also speak to the doctor about it on monday.
Becles - I live in Bedfordshire and have found a few things similar but think I will start with the gym fist, 1 thing ata time but have to admit it does sound great.0 -
Okay so Day one (yesterday) of food ate and execrcise done.
Food - pear for breakfast - not great and I will improve this.
lunch - chicken and veg heinz big soup (small tin)
had a yoghurt when got home as was hungry - normaly I'd go for crisps so made the decision to cut crisps out for now.
tea - went out to red hot restaurant as went out to cinema - not the best of choices but tried to eat sensibly I had rice and a 3 chunks of chicken with a small amount korma sauce (about two tablespoons), had half my usual portion which I was proud of. Then had a mustard salad with 2 chicken legs in piri piri sauce. Then followed by a pudding of fruit slices of pineappple, mango, melon and that strange peachy coloured fruit you get in chinese takeaways.
I resisted the icecream and the sweet deserts although I did really want one but I did really enjoy what I had.
Also I didn't feel uncomfy and bloated after which is I guess a sign I do eat too much normally.
I also didn't buy my usual two scoop tub of icecream which for me is a first. Could have done with it though as the film was a bit slow! Oh well can't always win...:p
Execrcise done - very little, walked into town to buy something for bf from shop. It started raining so caught bus home.:(0 -
Hi Silver Cat,
If my message did anything to help then I'm happy
I had the same issue as you with breakfast- the gagging is not fun. but starting small seemed to help- I still can't eat a huge breakfast before I leave the house, but I can manage a little cereal or yoghurt and then eat something when I get in to work.
I had a look at my bookmarks at home and these sites were quite helpful to me when I started researching:
http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
http://www.glycemicindex.com/
Exercise too has a big impact on blood sugar- one thing I learnt that even small amounts of exercise improve the effectiveness of the insulin your body produces- there is no pill/treatment that can do this so for me it was that piece of information that got me off my bum and on the bike!
I have definately seen big improvements and I really don't think I've been pushing myself super hard- in the past I have been much stricter with eating and been working out hard- kickboxing, boxercise classes etc and really struggled to lose anything which is why I suppose I pretty much gave up.
It does make me think that perhaps I was pre-diabetic before when I started putting the weight on- about 4 yrs ago, as there was no change to eating/activity it just started creeping up...ah well I'm dealing with it now so that's what counts eh?
As others have said- talk to your GP and nurse, hopefully you will also see a dietician and you should talk through everything with them- they are a great source of information. Also I think that because of the fact that I am challenging/asking questions about everything and really making an effort to turn things around I am getting a lot of support from my GP which always helps- he knows that my aim is to get to a point where I can gradually start to reduce the blood pressure meds and other things I take and is helping me get there- I'll always take the diabetes meds if only because they can help keep the disease at bay for as long as possible- but as for the rest there is room to improve things.
Anyway, I hope you start to feel better about things and feel good about dealing with it, I'm around if there is anything you think I could help with/if you want a natter/rant.
Good Luck:D

Most GPs won't prescribe a blood sugar monitor and test strips for you at this stage but blood testing is the only way to know what different foods are doing to your sugar levels. If you can afford it, buy one.
You need to know what your blood levels are one and two hours after eating so you have to test regularly at first until you learn what pushes your levels up. It also makes it easier not to eat the wrong things when you test and see high results.
You do need to find out what's right for you. If I had followed the standard diabetic diet information, I would be on medication now because some of the advised foods make my sugar levels skyrocket.0 -

Quite a few GPs will prescribe a 3 month course of Slimming World if you go and ask them, I think it would help you with your health and also the bank balance! They do expect you to lose something (a stone for example) in that time, and some might then go onto prescribe another 3 months. There is also a very supportive thread on here full of SWers if you want people to chat to - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3205350.
With your new diagnosis I agree with what Margaretclare has said about keeping a stable blood pressure. Eat little and often. Good luck!
I would suggest slimming world, its working for me.

Day 2 (wednesday)
Meals for day
Breakfast - pear, plum - a bit better but going to aim for having a yoghurt tomorrow as I've got a fridge full of miller lights
Lunch - chicken and veg big soup (small tim) with a small cheese melt type thing
Afternoon snack - pear and an apple
had a sneaky jam tart when I got home
Tea - this went a bit wrong as the jacket potatos when taken out of the oven smelt nasty but I was too tired and just wanted to eat so just ate the beans with a cornish pasty.
Exercise - half walked to work (got a lift halfway), walked into town but then got bus home (raining).
Wins - No crisps, took medication properly (this is one thing I always fail at so 3 days in a row taking tablets properly is a big thing for me)
Failures - Jam tart, not much exercise
To Do - Must buy some scales on saturday so I can weigh myself and put on here as a monitor or progress because I am determined there will be progress. Also some new shirts so that I have a few work clothes that actually fit me - time to admit I need a bigger size, well just for now anyway.
Just as a question and this might seem a bit wierd, but when I put weight on my bust size also increased and is quite nice and fuller if I may say so myself.:p When the weight falls off does that mean I lose my bust?
Thanks again for the encouraging words and links and suggestions. I've made a notepad list so am going through all of them.0 -

I'm going to ask my GP about membership fot that tomorrow. I looked at the site and it does look good with loads of info so I will update as to what he said.
I tend to only come on here early morning and about lunch time as am doing this at work on my breaks.0
