Ear piercing for boys - For or against?

I've never been a huge fan of piercings in boys/men but my OH has his ear pierced so it would have been really hard to justify me not letting son do it. DS1 has never wanted to but DS2 had his done at around 13. he's 16 now and just started stretching it - it's maybe 1cm now and he says that's as wide as he'll go but I don't like it. And what really bothers me is that if he does go bigger I'll want him to grow his hair a bit so it doesn't show on my wedding pics in October!!0

I don't like earrings on children, and I have never had my ears pierced so I told my eldest girl she could not have hers done until she was 16 - she was not happy but accepted what I said
6 months later, my 14 year old son who looked older appeared with an earring
My daughter was not amused - neither was I, but it was too late, he'd had it done. Not Rachmaninov
But Nyman

At my DD school only girls under 12 that have their ears pierced come from the rough families and there are only a couple of boys there with earnings, they are also from the worst family.
If it was my boy, no way, when he gets to 15 or 16, then he can make up his own mind, but I hope by then I will have instilled in him the sense to understand how men with earrings are interpreted by most of society. Rough, chav, going nowhere.
One of my best friends btw, has an earring and he's a company director, so do I think it ruins your life, no, but it certainly doesn't help.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
That's unfair. It doesn't necessarily indicate being a chav and poor, it can also indicate homosexuality.
Perhaps it indicated homosexuality many years ago, but you would be hard pressed to define it by pierced ears these days. In fact the gay men I have met don't have pierced ears.0 -
So many judgemental people on here wow. I'm neither a chav nor do I come from the worst family ever yet my daughter had her ears pierced at 4 because I really don't think its that big of a deal. I've a friend who is a proper rock chick with several tattoos and piercings and she is a teacher. You can be completely respectable during the day then put in your piercings in of an evening and many people are none the wiser. I do not dispute that plenty of chavs do have this done but it isn't exclusively a chav thing and isn't the thing that defines you as a chav.0

I am in my 50's and I quite like earrings in men although prefer one earrings to 2 matching ones (that always looks a bit wrong to me and a bit too girly!).
I think 12 is too young. If it were my son or daughter I would rather they waited until about 16. I think children with earrings look horrible., especially those big hoop earringsThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
how else are people supposed to know if boys are gay or not , (if they don't have gaydar)
apparntly when i was at school if you had your right ear piereced you were gay you left you were straight lol
i think boys can pierce there ears if they want but men look so much better without

blimey...so much for 'don't judge a book by it's cover'...seems that to lots on here an earring is a condemnation of your place in society. Hopefully I've brought my son up to realise that he can achieve whatever he wants to if he works at school, thinks about what he wants to do and doesn't get upset by narrow minded individuals who will make judgements on him over one accessory in his ear0
