Thanks everyone for your help. I eventually had to admit defeat and took it to a friend of my Sons who deals with software probs etc on computers. After 2 hours he had the recovery disk being acknowledged but it changed nothing. He is now installing a new operating system for me which hopefully will give me a working computer again.
once it's back working, every so often incrementally back-up your files to an external HD / make a new recovery disc too/ and make a manual system restore //BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

My problem with external hard drives is my last one broke and I lost everything I had saved that I had deleted from my computer. Looks like I can't win either way.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

The answer is not to delete them from your computer, a backup needs 2 or more copies!!

Still should always keep at least 2 copies of data on different media for safety, another machine or dvd's or another hd!!
