you have gone into the BIOS and set the DVD drive as the first bootable device and hdd second, haven't you ?? If you haven't, the lappy won't see the dvd, only the (poss corrupt) hdd operating system......
added 'coz I've just been back through the thread and it's not been mentioned......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Indeed, you may need to press F12 on start up(with the disc in the drive) and choose the optical drive at the first to boot.0

I don't understand your last comment Gunjack. How could I go into the Bios when I only had 2 options when the laptop switched on? The only things it said were to start normally or systrm repair. There was nothing else to click on.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

when you first power-up the lappy, you'll get a manufacturer/BIOS splash screen with some options like
press F2 for Setup F12 for boot device
or similar, BEFORE windows tries to load. You have to go into Setup or BIOS option to set the laptop to boot from the dvd drive first......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

just to clarify how to get the laptop to boot from the optical drive...
1. with power on, eject the disk tray
2. insert the recovery dvd you burned earlier, but DON'T close the disk tray yet
3. hold down the power button on the lappy to shut it down.
4. close the disk tray WHILE THE POWER IS OFF
5. press the power button and follow from my previous post to enter setup/bois to change the boot order:)
Note:- as the lappy then begins to boot from the dvd, you may have to (on some models) press a key to confirm booting from the dvd drive.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Thanks. As it ran out of battery it does not want to restart so will try again tomorrow.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

note:- you will need to run it off the mains to use the recovery dvd, vista won't let you run off battery for this. BTW, NOT a good idea to attempt this stuff on battery-only whether it lets you try it or not....plug it in......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Thanks I'll try when I get home from work tonight. The reason it was on battery was in case I got stuck with it not closing down again till it ran out of power.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Thanks everyone for your help. I eventually had to admit defeat and took it to a friend of my Sons who deals with software probs etc on computers. After 2 hours he had the recovery disk being acknowledged but it changed nothing. He is now installing a new operating system for me which hopefully will give me a working computer again.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0
