Do people really find it that much of a hardship to keep the trigger squeezed for a couple of minutes when filling their cars then?
Well, I find it really difficult as I have poor grip strength due to arthritis

Even worse in BC in Canada - you have to go into the petrol station kiosk first and handover your money or card before you fill up.

That's not just the policy at some petrol stations - it is BC Law!

Don't get many 'drive offs' in British Columbia then. :)

I would like the programmed fuel delivery. I fill my work van up every other day and could be filing my nails in the couple of minutes it takes to fill up the tank!

I think with the programmed fuel delivery you still have to actuate the pump grip to dispense fuel - it's just the pump stops pumping the fuel at your chosen x litres or £x.

You are potentially risking your life, and that of others around you, on the reliability of that mechanism and I can assure you that, albeit seldomly, it does not always work - that is why the practice is banned in this country - it's not because we are uncivilised.

Are HGV fuel pumps vastly different then ? - they have this mechanism do they not?

    Yeah they do

    But

HGV's run on diesel which is far less likely to set anything on fire due to it's nature

Also HGV's usually take on board 2-300 litres at a time

    Some do less than that

We use Volvo B9 engines in our buses at work

    I think they are 9.4litre straight 6's

They on average (stop start through Central London) do on average 6-8mpg

They get filled up everyday, and usually take on board 2-300 litres

We get 4 diesel tankers a week now!
