I'd forget about it completely until she's in her 20's as the car might be cheap to run but I'm sure as hell the insurance will be astronimical!
My 17 year old nephew just passed his test and lives in a pretty affluent area in the NW. The cheapest quote for insurance on a very small engined, low tax etc etc is 3k!!!LBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130 -

concentrate on the insurance first....that will be the biggest cost; the prices you'll be quoted will probably be more than the price of the car.
MOT prices are standard and are not cheaper/expensive depending on your car.
i have been in a similar situation as your daughter. go for a ford ka, corsa, fiat punto etc.:grouphug:Official MSE canny forumite and HUKD VIP badge member

I agree with this. Focus on the insurance first, find a car that gives you the best insurance price.
The cost of tax is tiny compared to insurance, even if its in a high tax band and you end up paying £160 a year.
MOT and maintenance costs will be similar with all cars (unless your buying brand new??).0 -
My daughter will be 17 in a couple of weeks and shes looking for a little car to learn to drive in
Oh and IMHO I wouldn't bother buying a car until AFTER she has passed. Some people take years before they pass (and some never do) during that time the car is sitting there depreciating. Spend the money on a decent instructor to get her through the test and then start looking for cars.0 -
The following cars are, I think, the only group 1 insurance cars now on sale in the uk. There a few more in group 2, but I suspect these will be expensive enough.
Chevrolet spark 1.0
Fiat Panda 1.0
Vauxhall Corsa 1.0
VW fox 1.2
The first 3 qualify for £30 road tax. The vw is £115 I think.
Remember comprehensive insurance is now often cheaper than 3rd party or 3rd party f & t.
Adding an adult as a 2nd named driver can also reduce the cost of insurance.
Don't under any circumstances put the adult as the 1st named driver thinking that it'll bring down the cost of the insurance. This is known as fronting and is illegal. Plus the insurance companies are getting wise to this.
Good luck0 -
Read through previous threads. Someone asks this almost every day. Insurance groups are often a bit meaningless. Just put different cars through moneysupermarket until you find one thats cheap. Alternatively if you want something actually interesting then a classic car such as a Citroen 2CV, VW beetle or proper mini are often cheap through owners clubs.0
