I must say buying a classic car has been mentioned as a way to get cheap insurance.

It is sometimes surprising what is considered a classic these days aswell.

My first car was an Austin A40 mk2 Farina. Sideways fun and games.

I think a lot of people are put off by the minimal regard for occupant safety in their construction.

Come on now Landy, don't tell me you wouldn't be tempted by say an early ninties Renault 5 if you were 17.

    MK1 Golf is another candidate.

Austin A40 with minilites and a tuned engine, maybe with slightly wider wheel arches, maybe a five speed box, what about a V8?????

Oh, I am going to lie down.

I heard Land Rover Defender's are pretty cheap to insure for young drivers... otherwise i think they'd be better off with one of these... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettler-8881800-Hurricane-Go-Kart/dp/B003U2T9AW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309880596&sr=8-1

Fiat 500 is the "in" car for girls at the moment. Very cheap and very cheap to run, insure, tax etc.

There are loads of the ex driving scholl Fiat 500's going through BCA at the moment, they are listed as ex driving school aswell, so no worries about buying one without knowing.

There was also some diesels and some autos.

Don't know what they will go for, niche cars like that tend to be pricey used. Even at auction.

    Landrover defender really?

I have a daughter about to be 17. We have an old jeep (and i mean old hold onto your seats - apparently it's a classic!) and 2 Volvo xc90s. I had assumed that big cars would be expensive.

We are thinking about buying a fiat 500. Need something small as drive is already full.

Everybody is raving about the Fiat 500. It has turned into the "must have" accessory for the in-set. Much like the Citroen 2CV in it's day. A cheap, funny looking but strangely pleasing little car which costs next to nothing to run. Whole streets in London are filled with these little cars parked at the roadside at night apparantly.

I can drive a landrover defender though (farm girl).

A fiat 500 scares the life out of me. I won't be able to see over the traffic!

Might phone up and see how much they want to insure the jeep. She will not be amused! I did take it to car wash for 1st time in 4 years last week. They fell about laughing as it had old birds nests etc on top. Plus it's a funny colour where it has faded in the sun.
