Because a new driver has enough to worry about without having to hope they're going to stop every time they need to brake?
i agree with your point, but i view it differently, if a new driver has a car bought without power steering/assisted brake it should make them over time a more appreaciative driver, and more importantly think ahead on the road, stopping distances, turning angles, reversing parking etc, just because they jumped out of a new car doest mean they should have the equivelant spec to be bought for them.
a parent should always go out on the first couple of drives with their newly passed son or daughter, and if the car hasnt got the power steering and abs etc etc then take them somewhere quiet let them get used to the clutch and steering and most of all point out the brakes will lock up so be mindfull and let them get used to them, let them get to know the point at wich they will lock up on so they can put extra caution to their driving.
some mk4 fiesta's have no PAS or ABS, nor do MK1 corsa's or saxo's.
i also have an opinion about small cars for young drivers, many people have fears about driving a larger car than what they learned in, and this is because theyve learned in a small compact car, they bought a small compact car drove it for years, then when situations change like thinking about a medium large family car of their own theyre apprehensive to buy one due to its size, i learned in a fiat brava hatch back, and then went onto my dads policy a 1.9 deisel turbo rover 200 on M plate, i loved everything about the size, as it gave me more confidence to be able to drive a bigger car, for a period i had use of a VX 2.0l frontera 2.0l sport and had no problems or quarms about being able to drive it. i know someone who is of the same age as me, been driving small cars since learning and cant even drive anything bigger than astra because it frightens her.0 -
Damn - ABS - you've just reminded me of something else this 106 doesn't have I'll need to be aware of0

That's awfully expensive, where do you live?
BTW having just bought a 19 year old 106 myself I'm not sure I'd give it to a new driver fresh from an instructor's brand new car given it's lack of power assisted anything
TBH I prefer my 106 as great for visual checks, and I feel in more control than my instructors fiesta zetec. Had my 106 since May last year.
Just had full service and I know everything including brakes are working and safe. Had service done at home and had everything shown and explained to me.BSC No: 186 There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Unless someone's nicked the candle !

she will not be getting a new car it will be an old banger lol if i had the money to be buying her a new car i'm sure i wouldn't be bothered about the insurance costs.
Thanks everyone for your help x0 -
Get her a bike and spend some of the insurance money on taxis for a couple of years. Why does she need a car?0

it's hard to say which will be the cheapest without shopping around. What you don't want to do is go for the same as everybody else, have a think about which cars lads your age go for..... and then go for something different!
If 20,000 teenagers buy Saxo's / Clio's / 106's / C1's / etc and 50% of them have accidents, it's putting the cars at a high claim risk. Look for something different, Rover, old Toyota, Volvo etc.. something your dad or granddad would drive rather than your mates. While your mates are putt putt putting around in a Saxo you could be bopping around in something like a Volvo V40 with full leather interior etc.. Especially as you can pick them up proper cheap0 -

Just tried to add my elder son to the insurance on my Mazda2 from his 17th birthday (in August). My insurers declined cover so he'll have to wait until renewal in January to try with different insurers. With any luck he'll have passed by then (which will probably add to the cost:().0 -
I must say buying a classic car has been mentioned as a way to get cheap insurance.
It is sometimes surprising what is considered a classic these days aswell.
My first car was an Austin A40 mk2 Farina. Sideways fun and games.0
