A while ago I spilled coffee on the keyboard and immediately flushed it away with copious amounts of water using the shower.
Fitted a spare keyboard and left the soggy one to dry for a week or so. 50% of the keys then refused to work. Stripped it down and left it for another week. No improvement.
As I really wanted my dell AT 102W clicky keyboard, I eventually had to individually strip each keyswitch down, clean with meths dry and re-assemble.
No way would I put a keyboard in a dishwasher. You have been warned.

Probably because the shift key and full stop keys have stopped working since the keyboard was cleaned. Still, there's always the "B" Ark to look forward to if you are a Keyboard Sanitiser.

During the washing process, the dessicated food-spittle, crystalised phlegm, dried excreta and semen protein residue, is washed onto the carbon pads of the dome switches, and onto the carbon tracks of the membrane.
Remedying that generally involved a complete keyboard strip down.
The fun part always comes from reassembly. Finding the right hole for each of the 102 key tops is a useful test for Alzheimer's.As I really wanted my dell AT 102W clicky keyboard, I eventually had to individually strip each keyswitch down, clean with meths dry and re-assemble.
If the operative is too vigorous during the cleaning process or uses an unsuitable solvent-based product, the carbon can rub off. Should that happen, the keyboard is permanently damaged and is left fit only for donation to charity.0 -

That has been my experience.

Each switch had to be dismantled. the black bit has to be prised apart. Inside the switch is the grey bit that holds the button, a coil spring, two leaf springs and the bit that holds the contacts.
Why did I bother? When in use it sounds like this and feels great!
Almost as good as the legendary IBM model M keyboard.
