Wonder if the pressure washer would do a better job?
I usually just tip the keyboard upside down, tap it gently to get rid of the stray biscuit/crisp crumbs and then hoover up the dust. Cheap kids paint brushes are good, or an old toothbrush to get between keys. Clean keys with antibacterial wipes, my electronics engineer husband would throw a fit if I attacked any part of the PC with liquids! On the other hand, wonder if the CPU could do with a quick bath? What do you think, is it worth a try, result in divorce or murder?

You should see some of the laptop keyboards I have that I sell keys from. I used a couple as examples of filth under keys when I did a talk on basic computer maintenance at my radio club a couple of months ago. When I showed a picture of a fag burned keyboard with loads of fag ash and dried pot noodle on I'd got from Google, one guy held his hand up and said his looked like that.

    Hmmm

I clean my laptop the same way every couple of months. Works fine as long as you let it dry thoroughly.

Outpost. I tried this after I read your post but I'm getting worried now since my laptop won't seem to switch on! Can you tell me how long I need to dry it for please.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

You're doing it wrong. Once you take it out of the dishwasher put it straight in the microwave for thirty minutes (if you don't have a big enough microwave you can use a preheated oven but you'll need to adjust the cooking time accordingly).

    What temperature in the oven?

On a serious(ish) note, I just use those cans of compressed air for blasting any little bits out. Takes seconds .... but make sure you do it outside, bits go everywhere!!!

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

I put it in the oven as suggested and it is now perfectly dry, so I 'm nearly there.
Some of the keys are difficult to press now though and are a slightly different shape. The screen has a definite curve to it as well.

Anyway, I've put it on charge and will see how it powers up tonight.

Thanks for all the advice. :j

A few years ago, my elderly neighbour asked me to look at ther TV as she wasn't getting any reception.
The fault turned out to be her Freeview box (separate unit, not built into the TV), which her cat had decided to pee into.

The main CB was a gunky yellow, evil smelling mess, so I removed it, gave it a goos rinse under a warm shower, put it in the airing cupcoard for a couple of days then refitted it.
As far as I know, it's still working to this day.

If you think keyboards are bad, you should see the sate of some of the stuff I work on.
I'm an avionic engineer (working on helicopters), and most of our pilots eat sandwiches and biscuits and drink coke (or similar) whilst aviating.
As you can imagine, the crumbs get all over the radios and instruments, and often cause all sorts of problems.
I could forgive them if they were flying for 87 or 8 hour stints, but the most they do is 1 1/2 hours at a time.

another thing: esp. if sharing a keyboard, are the amount of germs and bacteria on a kb and then your fingers and then your mouth and then your intestines  and then u fall ill :(
