or do the clearance yourself since you see it as an unreasonable fee

That looks suspiciously like a pointless answer. Keep up the good work.
  • Why is it a pointless answer?

It is possible to do the clearance yourself at no cost, thus avoiding the need to pay Parcelforce to do the job for you.
This is a money saving board and the point mentioned by Custardy is a perfect example of how to get what you want and save money at the same time.

yet the evidence seems to point otherwise

I'm sure it is. Perhaps you would like to share with all the money savers the correct procedure to follow once PF have the package in their hands and won't release it without payment of a fee. That would be *useful*.

useful thread - shame a troll ex postal worker has tried to sabotage it

Quite agree - unfortunately the post count suggests multiple thread trolling - quantity over quality and all that.

I've got an ex-postman in my street - he got caught stealing and was fired. Now I'm not even hinting that to be the case for custardly, but I'd tend to hold the opinion that RM would try and RETAIN good, hard working staff - just a thought.

If you wait until PF have the package then they have already cleared it through customs and you have left it too late.
A bit of homework carried out before ordering the goods would have shown you the procedure that you needed to follow. (A phonecall or e-mail to HMRC would have been enough)

'To avoid paying Royal Mail a handling fee you can declare the goods yourself.
You will need to ensure that the sender clearly marks the parcel ‘goods to be customs cleared by importer’. You will then need to complete a legal import declaration which you will have to send to our Central Processing Hub in Salford.

They will calculate any import charges and write and advice you of your tax liability. When you have paid this and the funds have been cleared, the Hub will clear the documentation and inform the Customs unit at the relevant Royal Mail Office that the goods may be released for delivery.
This manual procedure will considerably delay receipt of your goods. You can obtain copies of the import declaration form from our National Advice Service (NAS) on 0845 010 9000.'

I'm sure that you would find out the costs involved before getting work carried out on your house or car, so why wait until after PF have carried out a service before questioning the cost?
