Should I stay or should I go?

I think I am just after a bit of reassurance from you lovely guys...

I currently work about 30 hours a month in a day centre around my other full-time job on a bank/ relief contract. Have been doing this for the past 18 months or so and did a lot extra when the boss left and they were seriously short-staffed.

My hours are due to be reduced after Christmas and this was done in a really dodgy and underhand way, leaving me just 10 hrs a month. This upset me a bit cos I enjoy the job and think highly of the guys that attend the day centre and it has also upset them.

The problem is I am feeling totally undervalued by the current managers, I feel that I am taken for granted and not appreciated. I feel that I almost burnt myself out when they were understaffed and now I am being kicked in the teeth by having my hours reduced. I feel like sticking 2 fingers up at them and walking completely but I feel that I would be letting the members down and naturally I would miss the money! And am worrying that this is a knee-jerk reaction and not a decision I would make in the cold light of day and don't want to rush into anything that I will regret.

At the end of the day, I know that I could do extra in my full-time job and make up the money there or by working somewhere else but I like the job (except the managers!!!) but hate feeling low and lethargic and unmotivated.

So what do you think?! Should I stay or should I go... any suggestions and ideas gratefully received...

    I think only you can decide really. If it's a job you enjoy then it may be worth sticking it out for a bit and seeing how you feel a few months down the line? It doesnt sound like you're desperate to get out of there, so I think take your time and see how things develop.

  • I know only I can decide and appreciate your comments. I am just sick of being treated the way I have been. I am a manager of a similar project in my other job and would never dream of treating people the way they have treated me! I will think on...

    Ok here goes...

    Reasons to stay
    * brings in extra income
    * I enjoy it (mostly)
    * don't like to let the members down
    * it is likely one of the managers will leave shortly and maybe worth 'riding the storm'
    * will miss the members

    Reasons to go
    * my mental health is important, as is my self-esteem
    * i feel undervalued and used by the managers
    * to stand up for myself
    * would have more free time for myself
    * would be able to find other work if I wanted

    I suppose one way to think about it is that it is easier to get a job from a job! Stick there for the present but look around for something better. Once trust is broken it can be really hard to build it up again. At the end of the day you have to look after yourself first.

    I have been kicked in the teeth as you have by bosses before but still there at the mo. I have always shown great loyalty but at the end of the day I have realised this counts for nothing. Sorry you have been let down. I am sure you will make a decision. As you say though, think about first, dont rush in.

    Oh crawley girl, just leave.

    you know as well as I do how much bank work there is about for people who work in social care. they literally cant find enough people to do it.

    You'll always be able to find work elsewhere! the way you are treated impacts on your emotioal health, once your emotional healths effected you become a not-as-good worker and also start feeling deskilled.

    A change is as good as a rest- just leave!
    :beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
    Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
    So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:
  • I agree leave, its upset you enough to post on here and do a pro's and cons list.

    You can make up the hours where you currently work or get work elese where is you want some extra cash, but your health is most important and if you feel its pulling you down they can't pay you enough to make you feel better
  • I agree as well. Leave. They have shown they cannot be trusted and do not value you. Don't let them walk all over you!

    I speak as one who worked for a bank for 7 years and was constantly undervalued, undermined, lied to, and finally made redundant - after being completely assured that our jobs were safe.

    Now I have worked for 10 years for a fantastic firm who value their staff and gave me an "in" into the IT industry.
