hi everyone, I'm thinking of going with MoreThan to insure our new puppy (arriving soon!)

Their Premier (top level, 4k annual limit per condition) cover is coming in noticeably cheaper than most others (half the cost in some cases for almost identical cover) at £11.80/month.

Just wondering if anyone has any recent good/bad experiences of them, before I accept?

I'm not sure 4k would be enough cover for a dog TBH, my cats insurance is 7k and I've never insured for less.

12k is an option for an extra £1 or so per month... i'm just aware that that makes it their top product, and the chance of them vastly increasing the renewal in a year's time is likely!

Is there anyone here that recommends a certain dog insurance company that has personal experience of making a claim and would recommend or warn away based on that experience??

    Have a look at https://www.doginsurancecompare.co.uk
The person who created that site did so to showcase companies that actually were ethical e.g. paid out without argument. I would work from the top down but I have insured with a couple of companies there and had no bother. BUT please read the policy before you sign up - one or two companies have things in their policies that can be limiting.

The Rolls Royce of companies is Petplan but they are expensive and not affordable to some people.

Cheap insurance is not always a good buy but you only find out when you try to claim.

Petplan do not increase premiums if you make a claim as some companies do but they do increase each year- as all companies do- for increased running costs.

Their policies are set out clearly.

You do need to read the policy document- not the policy summary- carefully to ensure you know exactly what you are covered for.

If you want to able to have direct claims from your vet then check with your vet what companies they are prepared to do that from. My current vet will direct claim from most companies but my last vet would only direct claim from Petplan.
  • Not sure if this is the right place for this post? Our dog is insured with ** More Than **. We have never claimed. Our dog has had treatment with our local vet for ongoing Rhinitis. As it has not cleared up our vet suggested a referral to a vets with a CT scanner. This is 23 miles from our home. I contacted More Than to authorise the treatment in this referral. I didn't think there would be an issue as there is £8000 per condition available. I was told that our referral vet was not on their 'Preferred Vet' list'. Fine I said. I don't mind where he goes as long as it's not too far away. They advised me that my nearest place for a CT scan was an 80 mile round trip. Or I could pay £200 to go to a place nearer. I was quite upset by this. I was advised it was in the Policy wording. I checked the Policy. It does state they have this preferred network, but the places are so few and far between that it does not seem reasonable to expect us to travel an 80 mile round trip.

If there is no mention of the expected distances in their policy wording, can they enforce this additional £200 charge to us?

I was willing to travel some distance, but surely there should be an average maximum reasonable distance in this scheme? It is not made clear in their Policy wording. I just feel ripped off. Plus, to add insult to injury they have taken five weeks so far (still not paid up) for the original cost of his treatment at local vets for original treatment. They just do not seem to care and I get nowhere when I speak to their Customer Service centre.

    Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks

Ask them what the delay is. Often they have referred back to the vet and are awaiting a reply.

Any pet insurance underwritten by RSA have that restriction on referrals. it has been in existence for a while.
That is why you need to read your policy document carefully so you know exactly what you are covered for and it is suitable for you.

My nearest referral vet is 100 miles away and the orthopaedic specialist is 260 miles away. That involved staying over as well.

Luckily both are on the referral list.

New surgeries are being signed up regularly.

We recently bought two pedigree kittens from a breeder. We have had them for about 6 weeks now and no problem at all. However one of them seemed to be acting strange and kept clawing at his ears and even peed on the kitchen floor. He is now coming up to 5 months and the peeing may be something to him not being castrated yet and the weather was very hot last week. Hormones all over the place.

We took him to the vet on Friday and they gave him a thorough examination and found is ears were ok except for him clawing at them and blood was noted on his back claws. The vet gave him an anti flammatory injection, wormed, spot on flea, mite treatment and within 24 hours he is back to normal. Also no more peeing on the floor and now eating well again.

The vet was unable to offer a reason for the issue.

I tried to arrange pet insurance for him yesterday and one company said this would be a pre condition and if he ever needed an anti flammatory injection again for whatever reason a claim would not rejected.

I have now contacted Pet Plan and they require the report from the vets. This was emailed to them yesterday and now awaiting for their response.

If the vet could not offer a reason for the issue I am not sure how it can be treated as a pre condition in not knowing what the condition was in the first place. Myself I cannot help feeling it was mites in the ears as all the clawing at his ears has now stopped. Getting him and his brother neutered on Thursday.
