Could be someone think's he damaged their car (in a carpark for example), made a claim against his insurance, he denied it and the insurance company are still investigating = total temporary loss of NCB.
My car was damaged in a carpark, I made a claim and the elderly gentleman denied it until the independent witness had submitted their statement.... No witness = could drag on for months.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

So he hasn't had insurance since last year? Has he lost his NCD then? Not sure how long you can keep that if you have no insurance.0

I insure via RIAS who are for the over-50's. Just renewed XJ8 3.2 for £305 and Honda Jazz 1.4 for £184 - both with Fortis with protected NCB and we live in a rural area.0

do you have a more upto date version?
it's still usefull as a guide
It's not useful as a guide, it's the Aviva rating areas for motorcycle insurance from at least 10 years ago, even then their rating areas were very different from private cars. It would be helpful if someone wanted to know how high;y or lowly their post code was rated by Aviva for motorcycle insurance ten years ago
The rating for was vastly different then and is many many times different now from those areas.
The rating then was based on the first one or two letters of the post code and the next one or two numbers by Aviva on motorcyles narrowing it down to potentially many many tens of thousand of houses even then Aviva had many many more rating area for car insurance and also used the next number to amount of houses down dramtically to still potentially tens of thousands of houses. Now days the entire post code is used which narrows it down to maybe 10 houses.
One major difference would be the post codes affected from staged accidents and more importantly anyone living in an affluent area and viewing their postcode on that list could believe they live in a low risk area where as thanks to millenium burgalaries are now days likely to be living in a considerably higher rated area.0 -

?? Are you telling me if (example) you put your car off the road and cancel your insurance for 2 years that you'll loose 23 years of your no claims bonuses?! I don't think that's true. I thought you kept the years you've driven and not claimed... My dad will be devastated if he finds out he lost 23 years NCB.0 -

He doesn't have 23 years NCB - most companies stop giving further discounts at 5 or 6, some allow a few years more
But yes if you don't have a policy for over 2 years (3 with a few companies) it generally disappears. It may be possible to get some other form of discount though0 -

It could be getting marginal if it's 2 years, and proof of discount is needed. My insurers would decline this car with no discount, so it does look like that could be your problem
Try contacting the same insurers and ask if they can refer back to the old policy, perhaps with a goodwill gesture needed if it's slightly past the normal deadline.
edit: I just looked at a couple of sites for quotes, as mine is coming up for renewal, and it does look like it's 2 years0
