500% increase on insurance for 54 year old with 23 years no claims bonuses?!

My father was insured with Saga in 2010 (policy end.) he paid £110 a year which seemed fair. (£9 a month.) Come today, I thought I'd check to see how much his insurance would have gone up with all the price hikes. I was expecting a few quid here and there... But 500%?!

The cheapest quote I could find was with Admiral for £576 and that was with an whopping excess of £1,000. After scratching my head for a while I searched all the comparison sites, including most companies that are not on them and they are all come back in the region of £650+. I checked Saga and they say they won't cover him... It's the same car he was insured on before... So what gives?

Anyone here over 50 that can recommend an insurance company that will insure a man with 23 years no claims bonuses for under £200 please?... Lol.

It sounds very much as though what he was paying Saga might have been a mistake - it sounds far too low for any car policy

It seems odd they won't cover him now though.

I am with Saga insurance, think I paid around £140 last year. My insurance is coming up for renewal soon so I just did an online quote from Saga, similar situation to the O/P saga will not give me a quote.
I did an online quote through confused and I am getting quotes of just over £200, so may be worth trying.

I think your dad has the same issue as many board members.

My insurance nearly doubled, i used a comparison sute and got it below £500, just.

Bit of a joke really, but they have you by the short and curlies.

I am 76 and I insured both my cars with Admiral (£100 excess ) for a lot less than £576 total a month ago . What does Dad drive ? a Veyron ?

I would expect by the time I am that age and with such a good driving record to be able to reasonably insure anything I bloody well wanted.

    Also try NFU.

to be honest im starting to wounder how insurers get their prices.

a skyline, supra, impreza, cosworths,RS,MG ZT 2.5T volvo s60/s80 2.5T are all cheaper for me to insure than a 1.4 focus alone adding anyone to my policy increases it.
