What are those new cameras for on Ards-Dundonald dual carraigeway?

Regarding Road tax cameras, these are everywhere. They're just beside the fixed digital speed cameras on the Saintfield Road, Newtownards Road and Sydenham Bypass, but are also in many other places like outside Whiteabbey and Ballynahinch Police Stations for instance.
And they said Big Brother (the book, not the rubbish TV programme) was a work of fiction..............
Always seems to be a road tax camera in Holywood - none in west belfast however. Similar story to traffice wardens - they go where the get least trouble, not where the most offences occur0 -
The easiest way to get rid of the cameras in any area is to tax your car(for which insurance is required) and keep within the speed limit. If more people do that then the roads will be safer in that area.
If you hit an object at a lower speed then you will do it less damage and are likely to do less damage to yourself.0 -
Is it true that you are allowed to be 10% above the speed limit before you get fines/ points?Stercus accidit0

Just because I may creep over the speed limit doesnt make me a criminal.
If you're "creeping over the speed limit" then you are breaking the law. I'm not saying I never do myself but if I do and I am caught then that's fair enough, I know the rules.
Your argument appears to be more to do with with the Highway Code than with the speed cameras.0 -
Hope I don't meet you if you do 50 on the B roads. Slow down a bit. You never know when a horse and rider is just around the corner.I would quite happily drive at 80mph on the carriageway but personally I insist on driving at 50mph on the B-roads.
Even on main roads, where visibility is good, too many drivers don't even slow down when they see a horse. My 13yo daughter had a near miss when an artic flew past her as she was on the footpath, causing the horse to rear up and stray into the road in front of oncoming traffic.0 -
The roads are no place for horses these days.0

I wouldn't know to slow down if I saw a horse and rider on a footpath I must admit. I would assume it was similar to dogs being out and about ie that the owner was in control of them and that they wouldn't be out near main roads if they weren't used to traffic. I hope you had a stern word with whoever allowed your child to go out near a main road with an animal that was uncomfortable in traffic.Stercus accidit0 -
Just to be pedantic, legally you can do a speed suitable for the road and road conditions not exceeding the posted speed limit for that road.Legally, I can do 70mph on that stretch of road, take a turn into any of the B-rural roads leading off it and I can do 60mph.......... That's just insane, according to link above 46% of accidents occur on rural roads.

I disagree (to a certain extent) leftie. A horse is an animal .. any animal can react in an unpredictable manner if startled (similarly some humans can react very oddly when startled ... one guy who starled DW got a swift introduction of her foot and his family jewelsI wouldn't know to slow down if I saw a horse and rider on a footpath I must admit. ). A car could flick up a stone that on hitting the animal could make it bolt etc. It has been many years since I looked at it but if memory serves me correctly the highway code does say that addiitonal care should be taken.

From the highway code:
190: Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn or revving your engine. Look out for animals being led or ridden on the road and take extra care and keep your speed down at left-hand bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blocked by a herd of animals, stop and switch off your engine until they have left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.
191: Horse riders. Be particularly careful of horses and riders, especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slow. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse rider. Look out for horse riders' signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Treat all horses as a potential hazard and take great care.
Carrying on as if a horse isn't even there or revving/peeping your horn is incrdibly dangerous.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
