    Has anyone had this problem?

I can't seem to get the battery to charge - when I connect to PC via USB I can see the image which shows zzzzzzz between the two icons.

Battery status is showing empty, when I try and use it on its own I get an egg timer for a second and then it dies.

Help this was a Christmas present for my son - I have just read the full sale conditions

Now sick as a parrot as they say!

What you have to do is switch it on at the bottom (giving the egg timer display) and then press and hold the play button for a few seconds to switch on.

Also worth mentioning that the battery charge display seems to be inverted in that it looks like it's empty when fully charged.

As to the mention of a virus on the Tatung site - you may find that *you* have a virus that has infected the download. I've checked with a few antiviruses and they didn't detect one.

  • AngLangS,

Yeah thats what i was getting at, I think it could make a difference. I'm not sure if this is because it's USB 2.0 or just that by the time they made USB 2.0 they just got the power handling of these ports working better. If you have ports on the back I would certainly try them.

I believe devices are supposed to request a low amount of power first and then send a signal to request more. Some devices don't do this though and can lead to problems. Do you have other stuff plugged in to USB? How old is the computer? Does it not say what zzzzz means in the manual?

Thanks for the post - sorry for being thick - but are you saying that if I put it into a USB 2.0 port it might make a difference?

I plugged the USB into the front of my PC which I think is a slower connection

I'll try one of the others, I just didn't realise it would make that difference?

It has nothing to do with whether you have USB 2 or not. I've got an old computer with standard USB and it charges fine. Try plugging the lead fully into the player. When I plug my lead in it also goes to zzzzz but push it all of the way in and it should work ok.

As for the virus on the file, I've just downloaded all of the new norton anti virus definitions and no virus was detected. The virus infected file reported in this forum must have been just a one off for some reason.
    :D
  • You guys are the best - the tip on the inverted battery indicated plus the holding the play down for a while was all that it was.

Looks like a) you have made my 10yr old son's Xmas day and b) you have saved me the £25 that Microdirect would have charged me if I had returned it and there was nothing wrong.

This site rocks 'cos of people like you!

    Thanks again

    A
  • Sorry if this is a silly question but how do you transfer music files onto it? When I open folders where I've got music stored on my PC it's not showing up any of the files as a usable format and I can't figure out how to use the file convert tool :o

PS there is a virus attached to the download from the Tatung site, my virus scanner just picked it up!
  • I have also bought my 11 yr old son one of these, and am having trouble charging it . I have as suggested pushed the usb firmly in both ends but it still just shows the zzzz and empty battery? Do you hold down play when the usb is in or is this to start it up when charged?
  • Just asked my son to check it and guess what the battery shows empty but it is charged.I suppose this is why they are so cheap.

Any idea what trojan (which antivirus are you using?) - still none detected by Avast, I wonder if it's a false positive by AVG
