Been playing with this today.
Took about 2 hours to charge up (you can tell it's finished charging when the battery indicator on it stops changing) - so if giving it as a present you might want to charge it first.
You *need* to do the firmware update to get it working properly.
Apart from allowing it to play video and read ebooks it also solves a few problems. These include not booting up correctly when you have changed language (I changed it to Swedish and on reboot got a Japanese/English hybrid instead). The clock is also not maintained when switched off - in the update they now call it 'record clock' , which seems to be simply the date/timestamp used for the record filename.
Update and utilities over on: http://www.tatung.at/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=99&Itemid=47 and worked pretty easily. However you then need to reformat the player (just click on the drive icon on the computer, it will flag as unformated and then prompt you).
Good points:
1. Display pretty nice.
2. Sounds very good
3. Small (though not as small as the Qube one I use and that is currently on sale in Superdrug for 34.99 for 512). It also feels quite solid.
Bad points:
1. Need to do the firmware update
2. Radio a bit of an afterthought in the design
3. Screen size is 1" but uses the television method of size calculation in that it's about 2.5cm diagonally.
Haven't tried the video playback yet.
Overall quite happy I bought it and sure the person it's intended for will like it.They promised the earth...and delivered mud. Technically though it did meet the spec.0 -
re the last post.Does yours have a built in radio ,like the manual says or do you have the naff version built into the headphones?.Video is not bad converted an episode of lost and its very watchable0

isn't the radio supposed to be a digital tuner built into the player??? Has anyone else who's bought this mp3 player got the same problem with their radio?0
-
Manual says about built in radio but it doesn't seem to be included. None of the radio menus shown in the manual are there (even with the updated firmware).
As to the radio in the headphones - both of the ones I ordered have dead batteries. They promised the earth...and delivered mud. Technically though it did meet the spec.0 -
Well just had a go at adding some files to the mp3. It is a little fiddly and you do need to remember to download the firmware and format the drive afterwards.
There is an AMV converter included in the utilities programme that easily converts your mpgs to AMV to allow them to play on the mp3 player. I loaded a couple of music videos and a Simpsons episode and they work fine after conversion.
The screen is very small, but is watchable, for the kids anyway. All in all i'm happy with what I got for the price of a regular mp3 player.

Received mine the other day. The firmware update is simple to do. The player works really well and video playback is quite good.
How to you transfer tv episodes from a dvd to the player?0 -

Not 100% sure, and feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't you load the programme from the dvd onto your pc, convert it using the AMV utility then add to the player? Sounds simple, so i'm probably totally wrong!! lol
