Ok so we need to work on his confidence. Can you play games with him like putting treats inside an empty toilet roll for him to trash also hiding treats and getting him to find them. My colleague has two jack russels and she has a sand pit where she hides treats for them to dig and find. Perfect Jack Russel activity.

Next would be to introduce him to a clicker. If you google clicker training lots of advice will come up. Basically first you introduce the clicker by doing a click and immediately treat. Dog learns that click equals treat. That way when training a dog it is easy to quickly mark the moment dog did right even than the treat comes a little bit later. Then when he understands that click means treat start expecting a bit more from him. For example to sit before he gets a click and treat and then only sit from command etc.

The idea is that when he is excited about this and eager to learn one of you can distract him with the clicker training and the other one gets the post. If he stays calm while the other person gets the post the other person rewards him. Even if it is just nanosecond having his bum on the floor sitting calmly. Build it up.

So in a nutshell. Give him job to do that is ok for him to do so that he doesn't have to pick up the jobs himself (i.e. protecting the house from the intruder = post). When you get up in the morning and come home after being away don't immediately fuss with him, wait until he has calmed down a little bit. Play with him but make sure that you initiate the game and you finish it.

I hope this helps a bit. Let me know how you get on. And you can get a clicker in any pet shops. Of course some of the ones ordered from online come with instructions. My idol is Karen Pryor (I have been on her weekend course - she is amazing), she has written a book about clicker training, link HERE

Thank you Marru - thank you, thank you, thank you :j :j We will get a clicker and try this - we are willing to put time and effort in to save him, we just didn't know where to start, but this gives us something to work with

I have been talking to my sister on the phone, but before that I tried to post a photo of him, but did not work - I will have another attempt now ;)

Marru - I have checked out that link and will order Pryor's book at the weekend when I've got some money, but I did have enough in my Amazon account from a gift voucher from surveys to order a clicker with instructions so that should be here next week and Mr 3Dogs can make a start with it :j :j :j :j
