I could have sworn ive posted more recently but obviously not! Hello to MKMS & citizen Kitten, great to read more posts from such a diverse group of people. We all tend to bounce off each other & when one has a bad day, others help boost them :-)
Well husband came out of work Friday which means our monthly income is now £0! major freak out on my part (though it was all done internally whilst i smiled at the world)
He spent the full weekend leafleting & secured a few small jobs this week as well as coming helping me out on a few odd jobs. He has a chance of a job which we should hear about tomorrow.
We are now both pretty calm as he has received his last wage (after negotiation!) & we have been pro active in making sure we can cope. Still on rocky ground but we wont be beaten!
This is where multiple income streams come in.... I have managed to sell quite a few items from my collection of candles, soaps etc. I think now we are in november sales will increase as I have ladies & gents watches, kids novelty itesm as well as candes, soaps etc people are looking to Christmas now.
I hope the staff of Currys manage to get sorted, what a terrible blow, though no surprise after the £1 per store sell off last year. Scary stuff how easily jobs are lost now. Im yet to read the full account so dont know how many are affected but im sure there will be a chain reaction. It seems like a lifetime ago that woolworths shut down now but if I remember correctly it was about this time of year?trainee millionaire (aka not there yet!)0 -
Tinktay your OH is a Heating Engineer isn't he? What kind of work does he do?
Sitework, breakdowns, installs, social housing?0 -
Hi Tink
Sorry to hear about your OH. I'm sure he'll find plenty of business though. You are such a "can-do" pair - you'll be fine.
The same thing happened to my pet plumber who is also a proper heating engineer a few years ago so he decided to go self employed. He has more work than he can handle and now subcontracts out the plumbing jobs, fitting bathrooms etc. He does the gas safety stuff. He never advertises, his phone never stops ringing.
Glad to hear your sideline selling is doing so well.
I'm up with the larks this morning...which means I'll be half dead by this afternoon. Never mind I can have a nap later, although I've got the electrician coming to do a couple of little jobs.
Seeing that I'm up so early I think I will take myself off to the market and look for bargains. They have a couple of second hand tat stalls - you never know - the early bird catches the best worms and all that...
No offers on the house......Never mind, I'm not too bothered. I can bide my time. I'm thinking I might prefer to hang on to it as an investment and just let it out.
I need to mull it over.
Yes you are right - it was Christmas time when Woollies went bust. I feel sorry for the Curry's people - not a nice Christmas present. Oooops - just edited I think it's Comet not Curry's.
My DS2 works in a garden centre. I heard rumous a few months ago that their profits were down and he has noticed that the figures were down on previous years. He has had his hours reduced this week.
I've warned him that there may well be job cuts in the New Year. Luckily we did set up a stand alone PPI for him so he will have a breathing space.
I don't know if I mentioned it but he does have a degree but has been unable to find his dream job - hence working in the garden centre.
Anyway a few months ago he started studying to become an electrical engineer. He is paying for the course as he goes and has been studying in his spare time. He's doing well, passing his exams with flying colours.
On a positive note working fewer hours makes it easier for him to get on with his studies. If he does get made redundant the PPI will keep him going and he can then just slam through the course and get qualified more quickly.
There's not many black clouds that don't have a silver lining and of course he can help me with car boots and antique fairs as well.;)
I'm confident that we will cope with whatever gets thrown at us.0 -
This thread is always so inspiring but the title scares me. A million - what a great thought but such a massive target.
After a week of freelance writing there's £185 sitting in my ISA. The most that's ever been there0 -
Don't be scared - just aim high and do what you can.
Well done on the writing.:T0 -

Hi all,
I have just finished updating my spreadsheets to see where i now stand - as @ the end of October my net worth is -£9234.54. This is an improvement of £266.88 over the month, but i am still £475.61 worse off than when i started this journey in April 2012. Hoping for a quiet (ish) xmas so that no unexpected expenditure goes through.
My only planned expenditure is for my next lot of text books which i will need to order soon......
Hope you are all doing well......LBM @ 01.01.12 TOTAL DEBT = £13301.77. LH number 320
POAMAYC in 2013 #1 : £54.53/£10159.90

LL - ah okay subject to contract! another TLA i can put in my vocab. I am currently investigating the property market to see what sort of deposit i may need and additional money i will need for other things that go with it.
did you find any bargains at the market? sorry to hear those couples didnt put in an offer did you find out from the estate agent exactly why?
I wish your DS2 all the luck in passing his course asap and on to new things.
tink - oh I am sorry to hear of that news, I hope that it was good news for the new job offering. it sounds like you are worried because the dependable wage has gone, but I have all the faith in both of you being able to make things work for you, dependable wage or not.
great news on the candles etc and with christmas coming up this is very encouraging and I am sure the uptake will increase. I have been thinking about sidelines of your business... and thinking to expand maybe you could have a female run property maintenance kind of thing, so you team up with female plumbers, electricians etc and be a one stop female property shop. or link up with other female trades personnel and recommend each other.
although I have no idea if you had this model how it would affect your "inclusive diverse work force" i would definitely think this type of model would play very strongly for vunerable people social work, such as re doing old age care homes where most residents are females, schools etc. When I worked for an engineering firm, this played a very important part in getting jobs.
bmth- well done on the writing! i hope to one day earn by writing.
the money spider - isnt that thread great, i only found it myself about a week ago and i lurk in there, i havent read any of the pages minus the first.. i am wondering whether i should.
leictina - great improvement there! and most people i know start with debt to run their own business, it is about what you do with it that counts.
my own update
been slightly overcome by reality because we are off to speak to a priest on tuesday (after years of wanting this to happen, this is suddenly making it all so real!) and also i saw my grandfather yesterday, my grandparents have really deteroiated health wise.. it has been such a shock. they live about 2-2.5 hours away and I see them about 3/4 times a year but I think I am really going to have to start to see them a lot more often. I knew it was inevitable but i didnt think it would be so soon. it is just very hard to believe because until 1 year ago (him 90 she 85) would drive all through the south of france going to chateuxs and fairs picking up bits for my grandmothers antique textile business and now they dont go out the house. He is almost blind now and they only eat ready meals because they dont trust themselves with hot pans. it means they dont really eat vegetables which is not at all good for them. So for my grandfathers birthday I bought them lots of expensive ready meals for them to microwave that already come with nice veg.
i dont want to patronise them but they are refusing to accept they need home help.IF YOU THINK YOU ARE SO CLEVER, THEN WHY ARE'NT YOU RICH?
